Wow! Actually naming the starting QB several days before the game. Who knew that was possible?!

I am trying not to be nervous about this. He only had one decent game previously and it was against us. That bothers me a bit the more I think about it.

The bowl game against WVU too. Showed some good stuff in that one. I think he was misused as a pocket passer at unc. I imagine albin uses him here the way he used Navarro at ohio

Yeah I feel the same way. The dual threat thing reminds me of that QB we had at the beginning of the Poggi years. But that didn’t pan out well.

They all sounded super competent though so I’m happy. But does Albin have experience with a dual-threat QB? Or is this just gonna turn into wildcat formations?

There is zero chance that Albin is worse than the coaches we have had when it comes to the quarterback room.

That is the type of qb albin is used to. It’s what Navarro was at ohio

In 2023, Harrell had a decent game against WV, and played very well in cleanup time against Campbell, going 4-4 with a 41 yard TD pass, and running for a 61 yard TD. If he won the competition, I’m sure he’ll be fine. I’m also sure that he has some leadership ability, given his selection as a team captain.

Does Albin have experience with true dual threat QBs? Yes, without a doubt. Here are the stats for the most recent 3 QBs he worked with, and all of them could pass as well as run. They did have a wildcat type QB at Ohio, a very long time ago, and it didn’t work out well.:

Navarro:

2024- Navarro 195-295-11, 2423 yds, 13 TD; 160 carries for 1054 yds, (6.6 yds/Carry) 18 TD rushing

2024- Poulos 22-49-1, 271 yds, 2 TD; 28 carries for 149 yds (5.3 yds/carry) 1TD rushing

2023- K. Rourke 195-307-5, 2207 yds, 11 TD; 67 carries for 219 yds (3.3 yds/carry) 4 TD rushing

2023- Navarro 18-26-1, 185 yds, 3 td; 25 carries for 178 yds, (7.1 yds/carry) 0 TD Rushing

2023- CJ Harris 25-49-3, 248 yds, 2 TD; 12 carries for 55 yds (4.6 yds/carry) 0 TD rushing

2022- K Rourke 244-353-4. 3256 yds, 25 TD; 74 carries for 249 yds (3.4 yds/carry) 4 TD rushing

2022- CJ Harris 52-97-1, 577 yds, 3 TDs; 37 carroes fpr 168 yds (4.5 yds/Carry) 3 TD rushing

K. Rourke was more of a pocket passer, so he ran relatively less, but still had a few TDs running, and net positive yards. Harris and Navarro were true dual threat QBs, so they ran for a more TDs and more yards/carry. All were competent in both skills. The QB that preceded them, Nathan Rourke, was one of the best dual threat QBs I have ever seen. He could not find a position in the NFL, but he is now with British Columbia in the CFL where he is the #3 passer, with 3012 yards passing, and the #9 rusher, with 316 yards on 31 carries, for 10.2 ypc. His brother, Kurtis, being more of a drop-back passer, has a better shot at making the NFL.

My read is goin to need his dual threat capabilities to give some juice to this offense…. On that Hunter podcast our ā€˜fastest’ WR said he ran a 4.75 on his nfl pro-day.

I like the interview with the OC a few weeks ago as he broke down the different type of AAC successful offenses. So he seemed to understand what we experience in this conference. Academy option running games, Tulane built with SEC quality linemen and then wide open Offenses (USF, Memphis, North Texas etc.,).

I would agree that you don’t want a QB who can’t pass. I don’t know what offense Charlotte will be running, but it won’t be the wishbone. The pass efficiencies for the starters at Ohio were 2022 (K Rourke 167.7), 2023 (K Rourke 132.5), 2024 (Navarro 142.2). They were not run-only QBs.

It was a 4.65, fwiw but not in his usual clears and no warmup

I hope he picks the 1/2 quarterback. Guess that would actually be a 1/8th back.

clt says dear goodness the UNC CHeat unis are ugly

Thanks for that link. I watched the analysis of all three QBs. Both Harrell and Loftis look very good, and very close. Wilcke looks solid, but a bit behind the other two. Just because Harrell is the starter for the first game, that doesn’t mean for the season….yet. He needs to get the job done.

I also took it from that pod that he hadn’t been training for it, but has been putting in the work and would be running faster than that now.

Good one! I see what you did there.

Have we ever had a true dual threat QB? We had some that could throw and some that could run but doing both well has been relatively elusive.

The one year we had someone resembling that we went bowling
