Thing was, we came out in second half decently well. I think k that fake punt was downfall
UNT beat writerās take on the fake punt:
Imagine having players that tackle.

Really think we are overthinking most of this.
Albin is a very good coach.
We are down about 12 or 13 OL and DL from a hastily assembled roster on a shoestring budget.
Itās that simple. Get the money, fix the OL and DL. Get some depth on the roster to offset injuries and so we arenāt gassed in the 4th quarter.
This is very fixable with $.

That is an absolutely mind boggling stat.

They shut off beer sales and we folded. Coincidence???
hmmmm
Just checked in and saw notification of 30 new posts on this thread. SURPRISE! NOT ONE of the last 30 posts were about this game. Canāt we please either start a new Biff post or find the last one to post on? Itās annoying that so many posts are hijacked or morph into something TOTALLY unrelated to the title. Thank you for your attention to this matter. ![]()
49er1, done. Created new Biff Poggi post-dismissal discussion thread.

WARNING - must be able to handle reliving headscratching Niner D, trick plays, etc: ![]()
PREACH!! I took a break from the boards over the weekend and after checking in this morningā¦glad I did after seeing more Biff rehashing. The problems we have are fixable and Albin has shown the ability to turn things around in years 2 and 3.
My thoughts on Friday- defense played their ass off but ultimately wore down in the fourth quarter. Offense couldnāt do anything in the second half, fake punt was bad, etc.
This game was the best we have played all year till the wheels came off. was that because of fatigue or something else I have no idea.
The fake punt was dumb. Maybe they felt like they had to take the chance but it just felt wrong.
Given the circumstances if this year I am in no way giving up on Albin.
If we are still bad in year 3 then Iāll give up.
Honestly, I wasnāt bothered by the gambled fake puntā¦we just didnāt executeā¦if the kid hadnāt missed the block I think we had the first down easily. The team was 1-6 at the time, playing well and sometimes the gamble worksā¦get the block, it worksā¦it just didnāt unfortunately.
I was sitting in a bar in Bozeman, MT watching the game and cheeringā¦got others to watch the game even though the world series started they kept the Niners game onā¦folks there knew nothing about either team, but up until that fourth quarter collapse, folks were watching a good gameā¦it was fun.
This is my biggest question mark with Albin. I donāt understand how he decides to be aggressive and conservative.
Deciding to not go for it twice once at the 6 and another at the 3 and walk away with FGS. I get the call to get points and be conservative there. Also at the end of the half we moved the ball 2 plays 21 yards - then didnāt push the ball at all with nearly 30 seconds on the clock. I get the call to be conservative there as we have been bit by end of half mistakes.
Then compare that with the fake punt deep in our own territory in a one score game? Just weird to me to be so conservative then basically do a total 180. I guess he could feel the game slipping and decided why not - but seemed like the wrong time to get that aggressive.
The fake punt was a back breaker for a team that already had very little confidence. That was my biggest issue with it. After that the wheels fell off and I think it had a lot to do with that one play. Even if we didnāt win coming out of that game with a close loss could have helped build some confidence and belief that we could actually win a game. I still think Albin is the man for the job, but that play was a little frustrating.
It was no doubt a high risk move, but as I thought about it, their QB had already thrown for almost 400 yards just in the first halfā¦if it worked, Albinās a risk-taking genius keeping UNTās offense off the field, even if we punt later on the drive. UNT wasnāt expecting it, but a missed block killed it. If it worked, maybe it retains momentum for the Niners? If we went for it in a conventional way, I wouldāve been like WTF??? But, we just failed to execute and the wheels came off.
I guess what Iām saying is that I understand the decision to try it, sometimes a high-risk is high-reward, but when it fails it can lead to disaster.
Whatās really frustrating to me is why itās taken until the 8th game of the season to see good Niners footballā¦I thought the first half was the best the team has played on offenseā¦but seeing sooooo many missed tackles on defense, for me, was more frustrating than the fake punt.
I was basically ok with the fake punt though I understand all the questioning above. To me it seemed like the difference between still trying to actually win the game as opposed to being happy with a moral victory and trying to look as respectable as possible.
It was a calculated risk. I didnāt hate it, I just hated that we didnāt execute it properly.
This. I thought we should have been more aggressive early and the fake punt timing was all wrong. That being said we may have been smoked earlier if we had been.
