Injury update from Albin. DJ Burgess is out for the year. It sounds like Jaylon Johnson our other DE might play this week.

We have a depth chart, at long last:

It’s on page 11.

What does the bold OR mean?

What positions are NK, H, and SN?

People have noted the O-line is undersized, which I agree with. The tackles are FBS, but the guards are community college and FCS guys. I hope King is okay; hasn’t been good (those snaps) this season but his tenure is amazing. Plus, King’s backup had a stint with our D-line last year, which isn’t great.

CJ Stokes has already won a national championship with Michigan??

Braden Mullen is our Wuerfell trophy nominee.

D-line appeared undersized. The tackles are all FBS talent from the start with one exception. And Jalar Holley is the second oldest tenure player on the team with 5 years now. The ends are all FCS and community college talent.

All the LBs are fantastic talent. Shows on the field too. Wilford returned from last year.

[ā€œORā€ is not an abbreviation, it’s just the word ā€œorā€. NK is Nickleback (usually abbreviated NB), the fifth DB. H is the holder on place kicks. SN is usually abbreviated LS, and is the Long Snapper.]

As far as the argument that the lines are undersized, I’m going to mostly disagree that that is the core problem. Size is only one factor, and I believe that Charlotte’s lines both have adequate size. Charlotte’s starting OL averages 6’4ā€ and 302 lbs (which compares to Ohio at 6’2ā€, 293 lbs, as another G5 example). The top two strings of DT average 6’2ā€ and 285 lbs, which is certainly big enough. Only at DE is Charlotte on the small side, at 6’3ā€ and 234 lbs, but that’s because they are playing two Redshirt Freshmen, Simpson (215 lbs) and Talib (230 lbs), both of whom are very light. If Burgess (270) and Liverpool (255) were available, DE would be larger.

So, if I don’t think that the problem is as simple as size, what do I think is the problem with the OL? Is it talent? Quickness? Conditioning? Still adjusting to how to shift assignments as the D-line shifts and stunts? Confidence? I hope its not ā€œtalentā€ or ā€œquicknessā€. I hope that it is that they are still having to think about how the coaches want them to shift assignments depending on the D alignment, and therefore they haven’t been playing with the confidence and aggressiveness that they need to. Therefore, I hope that they will continue to improve with each game as it becomes automatic, and they gain confidence. They did improve a lot from the first game to the second one.

As far as the D-line, the DEs may be undersized, but Simpson and Talib both have made a lot of plays, so I’m not worried about them. Simpson has 7 tackles in two games, and Talib had 6 in his first game. Speed, and being it the right place, can make up for lack of size at DE.

I hear ya! It’s tough to see App and other programs change coaches and seem to bounce back quickly while we don’t. I know there’s other factors at play and programs are different.

I am for giving Albin time, I think most of us are. Our offense during Biffs first season really struggled to score at times, this offense looks worse (so far). I voted wrong people playing in the poll as I think we’re lacking talent/size wise in several positions.

Defense seems to struggle against any tempo. App ran some before building a big lead, Tarheels first drive, and Monmouth much of the game. I know you can only do so much but I hope they are practicing to improve against hurry up offenses.

Unless we beat App State next year we will again go 1-3 in non-conference play…Louisville and Ole Miss are big L’s!

2027 is the earliest I can see us coming close to bowl contention.
