Can someone explain to me why Jon Sumrall is not a leading candidate for LSU??
Probably is from what Iâve read. In fact, he, Golesh, and Silverfield are all likely coaching elsewhere in 2026.
Well if ole Scott isnât contacting realtors, I am sure his wife is. Seems a bit ridiculous that the Gov has nothing better to do than this. Maybe he should be focusing on the next hurricane that will hit the state, because it always does, every year, or the crime in the bayou. If there was a CSI TV show focused on a city in your state, that is a problem.
I know they would say itâs athletic department money going to pay the buyout and not technically state funds, but Iâm not so sure state government shouldnât get involved when a state funded university spends $50 million to fire a football coach. And this AD is the same guy responsible for the Jimbo Fisher hiring, firing and buyout so he probably shouldnât be allowed to ever hire another coach. If you are spending that much âathletic departmentâ money to fire a coach you better not be asking the state or students to fund anything related to athletics.
Colleges have no ability to manage money. Nearly $200M being paid out on buyouts this year. Businesses would go under with these decisions.
We are not the only school that makes bad hires
FWIW, Ross Bjork was the Texas A&M AD who extended Fisher in 2021 - approved by schoolâs board - and then fired him in 2023. Woodward left College Station for his alma mater in 2019.
Louisiana governor playing a good game of deflection. Afterall, the LSU board signed off on Kellyâs contract when he was hired.
Not saying Woodward doesnât deserve the criticism heâs receiving, just interesting that the complicit parties are somehow getting ignored in the process - even when they are front and center like Landry!
Interesting that itâs an attorney pointing this out and not a sports writer.

And this vid perfectly fits the LSU situation!
That was funny.
There was one short moment of real human reaction and then he shifted hard back to the party line.
After Carneyâs time here I didnât really see this in his future. Reynolds was always complimentary but fans not so much including me. I wish him well in the MAC.
The Will Healy coaching tree:
Will Healy - ETSU Head Coach
Mark Carney - Kent State Head Coach
Pete Rossomando - Lamar Head Coach
Alex Atkins - Interim OC LSU
Marcus West - Defensive line coach Buffalo Bills
Lets face it, there was no one in our leadership whom knew what good football or a good football coach looked like.
LSU has the Governor, their supervisor board which is made up of elected officials primarily forming committeeâs to select their Coach. They get an A for effort.
When we were hiring football or bball Coaches it seemed we had a committee of one or sometimes two; âDumb and Dumberâ![]()
Actually, the LSU Board of Supervisors is primarily made up of business owners, law firm partners, etc, as well as a student member, who are appointed by the governor.
Agree Landry gets an A - for acting. Thereâs a reason heâs called the âCombative Cajunâ and has been compared to Huey Long - the first Louisiana governor to get intimately involved in LSU football almost a century ago (and which continued after being elected US Senator until his assassination).
Anyway, Landry is definitely right to be concerned about Louisiana taxpayers being liable for the buyout in Kellyâs contract. A contract that was approved by - drum roll, please - the LSU Board of Supervisors!
Pretty much sums things up in Baton Rouge.
