Coach Rudolph and the OL huddle after a series today.
The practice was a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be. It was well planned and the ayers really got into it with a lot of energy.
The QBās look better than anytime I have seen them since 2013. Lots of depth. Just from today, here is my ranking fwiw:
- Gonzales
- White
- McNulty
- Harrell
- Loftis
Gonzales looked really good and appeared comfortable. White was a huge surprise. This young man has lots of potential. Harrell was still a little gimpy. McNulty threw some impressive balls. Loftis threw some good passes but a few bad ones as well. His feet are still too happy
WRās looked pretty good.
Our place kickers did not look good Our punter looked fantastic
OL much improved and huge. DL okay as we have some size and had push on it. LBās not an issue so far. Secondary got beat quite a bit.
Coaching looked better and the team looked in real good shape.
All in all a good show
Team practiced with some bite and didnāt mind shoving each other around a little. Gonzales had a terrible missed TD to start practice but was lights out from then on, the standout being a 25 yard rope over the corner that was run in for a TD. Lines looked bigger than last year
There is one placekicker on team, and 2 punters haha, are you referencing a specific punter by chance?
I think it will be Gonzalez or Harrell. White showed flashes but also showed moments where heās thinking too much. Harrell said doctors are saying he will be full go for summer camp. Loftis still has happy feet. Mcnulty looks like he has good arm but he only ran like 3 reps
running game looked good. Hopefully thatās the offense being that good and not the defense. Looked like lot of read option this year in the offense. Perteet looked good at rb. Gonzalez and white both looked really quick running the ball. I was told that ol green who came from Purdue didnāt play today but heās a beast by Rutledge
Wr barnes and hunter-Gibson both looked quick and fast
The kicker missed every kick outside 40 yards and he had like 6-7 attempts Very strong leg, probably enough leg to go 60 but he kept going left or right. The punter had several punts over 50 yards
Both lines definitely looked bigger The defense looked quicker and more aggressive They let the receivers get behind them a few times The offensive line had multiple holding calls the team was very chippy with each other so seeing that edge was good
Long was the good punter. I saw 2 place kickers and neither impressed me.
Again, thereās 2 punters. Long and Kelly. Long is the righty, Kelly is the lefty. Only one place kicker, Bui. So if referencing any FG, he is the only one possible while with punts, it could be either guy or both guys if all the punts just looked good. lol
Shane, am I correct to guess that you are related to #44, Ian Kelly, perhaps a brother or father? If Bui gets hurt, do you have any idea who the backup kicker will be?
As for other comments, itās good to hear that White looks good, but that it will probably be either Harrell or Gonzales. That was about the way I hoped it would go. Itās also good to hear that Perteet looks solid. Again, that was my hope, as he has the size to be an every down back. I know that Cobb and Rutledge will also be good, but both are smaller/quicker type backs.
Did anyone make notes on who was playing on the offensive line, or who the starters were at DB? Both areas are complete mysteries to me.
I only saw Long kick. So i presumed he was the only one. Most of the punts I saw were impressive.
I thought I saw someone kick a FG and miss badly and then a different kicker kick immediately afterwards and also miss badly. Presumed it was a different kicker but evidently I was wrong. The FG/place kicker was unimpressive regardless. Plenty of leg though.
Hey Carl, yes thatās correct heās my brother. Hence the reason for my question since I wasnāt able to make it up for the practice with my work schedule! Really excited for the upcoming season with all the moves made.
and to answer your question about second place kicker, my brother doesnāt give me any sort of insider information haha, but I recall Charlotte announcing a kicker from NC State transferring, so maybe heās graduating and coming next semester? Again, just a guess but I couldāve swore he already signed!
Can your brother place and FG kick? He couldnāt have done worse than what we saw.
Kicker is a freshman right? Albin said last night he had a rough day and it was going to be important to build his confidence up so he doesnāt get into his head too much. Mae sure he can bounce back after a poor outing.
First time on here, fired up I found the page!
For QB, definitely will be Gonzalez. dude looked good and like a leader. I think the train will be going too fast to ever pivot to Harrell. White did look good and I think after a year in the system could be a real threat.
also agree that they will be able to run the ball, beefy up front, the new left tackle is legit, and RBs look shifty. Qās looked good throwing the ball, but on the other hand you have to have concern with the secondary. They were burnt deep a few times that the O scored on and more than a handful of other times that were missed. I hope thereās a lot of zone in the playbook!
Donāt know many of the new receivers, I feel like the whole room changed over. Eley looks significantly bigger than last year so Iām excited to see him for sure.
Not sure what the confusion is all about with the specs. Thereās only one kicker on the roster with Boyd gone. you would hope they would bring in another guy to compete at K, I could have sworn I saw them post about a transfer. Punter looks like a real comp with Long and the lefty. Long started out with a great ball definitely over 50, but then struggled the rest of the way with one total shank under 30 yards. The lefty had two balls close to 60 and then a pooch inside the 10 that was in the air forever.
Defense overall didnāt look bad. The offense moved the ball, but other than the secondary getting burnt those times it was death by 1,000 paper cuts in 3-6 yard increments.
Overall the juice around the team seems legit, and Albin definitely has made his mark on the culture and the way things are moving and shaking. Iām excited to see what the polished product looks like in the Fall!
Any idea on more open practices or an official Spring Game?! I thought they were doing something similar to a Spring game, but today looked like a normal practice.
I think the whole room is RS Freshman other than Long. Iām less concerned about one off day, and more concerned about no back up. Life happens, rolled ankle, stomach bug, got to get a back up in the building just in case.
My brother actually currently has the honor of being the highest ranking specialist ever recruited by the school being 19th in the country when he committed!! However we learned during his recruitment process that most schools and even at pro level, because he kicks with his left foot most places see that as a hinderance because itās genuinely difficult to flip an operation the complete opposite direction. He decided to just focus fully on punting, which made sense to us considering he was an all-American honoree as a punter according to Kohlās Kicking!
But just know, Aiden Bui is an animal. My brother and him have been at many camps together over the years and that kid has always stood out. One bad day does not change my mind on who he is as a player!!
Welcome to the board!
What you saw was the closest thing to a spring game that we are doing. Seems like the spring game is being phased out at some schools. Hate that I missed it, but had other obligations.
Thanks for the insight. Enjoyed reading it and all the comments from people who were able to attend.
Iām looking forward to this season with the caveat of I always have to see the OL and DL in person, in actual game situations, before the cautious part of my optimism recedes. Also, the secondary seems to be a forever issue. We recruit so many DBs every season and we still struggle to put together a solid secondary. The lines are where G5 schools are supposed to struggle. Not DBs. Iāll never understand it.
I guess thereās no chances left to add anyone to address that weakness. Bummer.
Welcome to the board. Good luck to your brother in the coming season!
We just added a DL transfer. Should at least help depth
Who did we add?
