49er SoCon Football Scenario (Poll)

Scenario:

Donors get Dubois to start IAA football. SoCon extends invite, but ONLY on the condition that we are an all-sports member (including Hoops). Would you do it?

While Mike P is happy to relegate us to a true one bid hoops league, how many of you guys are, in order to get us football? Sarcasm and criticism aside, the A10 is not a one bid league. It’s traditionally a 2-4 bid league. Thoughts?

well lately wouldn’t you consider the A10 a 1 or 2 bid league because the lackluster performance out of the entire league has dwindled to that of a very uncompetitive league at best?

Great thread.

I would be more enticed if Coastal Carolina and Winthrop joined at the same time.

The A10 gets at large bids. The SoCon does not. End of discussion (seriously).

I’d like that, but I couldnt figure out how to put that in the poll without biasing the options.

Maybe I should split the ā€œbigger leagueā€ option into a) only if Winthrop & CoC join too", and b) only to position ourselves to move to a league like the Big East.

Hmm think I will.

why not just stay in the A10- and join their football league?

Well Metro:

 1. Its my understanding that the A10 is breaking up in football

 2. Compare the travel in the two leagues. Fans @ road games is what its all about.

I’m not gonna lie to you - I like football a lot, but I’m more of a hoops head. Has nothing to do with anybody or where our program is at. I just like basketball more than football - in the past, I’d much rather be at Niners-Bearcats game than UT-Bama in football, and I pull for both programs.

So this choice would be hard for me.
It would be interesting to basicly piggyback on App State’s success to start IAA football here… but I swear, the window could be open all the way with people outside screaming that it’s open and our administration would have its collective heads in the sand. Screw the politics, there is absolutely no reason for us not to be playing IAA football in the SoCo.

Here’s an interesting dilemna… might even post it as a new poll in the football forum:

I would jump to the Southern Conference for all sports in a second if it meant getting football. The A-10 was a good basketball league, but it isn’t now and who knows if it will be in the future. We could help raise the level of basketball in the Southern conference, who says they HAVE top be a 1 bid league?? Times change, 5 years ago the MVC and the CAA were one bid leagues, now they are going to Final 4’s and getting 4 teams in the big dance.

People around here would care much more about a CONFERENCE basketball game against App St. and Davidison then they do about Rhode Island or Fordham. We could develope some great REGIONAL rivalries and gnerate LOCAL interest which we don’t seem to be able to do now.

The adding of football just takes everything to another level and makes all those potential rivalries that much more intense. All the other advantages of adding football have already been discussed adnauseum.

I have NO desire to travel to see any of those games. The thing against the A10 now is there is nothing close, we don’t get to travel easily to other games, and other teams dont get to travel to our place. It doesn’t allow stadiums to fill up.

This is the last year for A-10 football, all A-10 school are moving to the CAA.

I didn’t know that. Is documented?

your question has merit,
we need to decide if we want 1AA football/mediocre hoops, or supposedly have good hoops/no football.

my sources have always told me Judy’s thoght on football was aiming for D1A or none at all, and that is a problem.

personally I’d like to us get a football ā€œaction planā€ so when the supposed next conference shakeup happens, we are in a league that has 1AA football and a 2-3 bid hoops league.

Well, I voted, but I was being honest, so it was hard. I wanted the poll to be public for a reason. I want our posters to let everyone know where they stand.

I voted that I could live with us being in the SoCon for long term. I’d much rather that be with the addition of another basketball heavyweight, to be honest. But I didnt pick the other option because as a former UT student and fan who has seen what it really takes to make it work, I do not think big time 1A football is possible in NC outside of the oldest, most established schools like the damned Holes and Moo U. I’d rather play IAA football with a chance to be App State than to end up as a bottom feeder in a wannabe 1A football league.

But I have to admit, short of a conference wide revitalization, it would kill our frequent NCAA invite trend to join the SoCon, not that we arent doing that on our own already.

Judy has said this publicly, so there’s no reason to quote sources.

And it’s a statement that I find ludicrous, because no matter what, you have to play IAA for a few years anyway. Ask UAB.

NA, maybe it is a glitch in the system left over from changing servers, but the IU poll is still showing up on my main page as opposed to the new poll. Any way to fix it??

Yeah, I’ll try. JCL has taken over as techy #2 these days behind Mac. I’m Obi-Wan and he’s Vader’d me.

[edit] - I fixed it, but be advised it is a temporary fix and may go away.

Didn’t Dubois also say that publicly last year?

I believe Judy and Phil were both set on D-1, but I think the success ASU has had my be opening their eyes a little more towards the benefits of 1-AA. I had a conversation with Phil and he acted like the most you draw for 1-AA is 10,000 and a lot only drow less than 5,000, he was shocked when I told him ASU draws over 20,000.

Bottom line is D-1 Football would be great to potentially get us into a BCS type conference, but even if we have football if we are only a middle of the pack A-10 basketball team, we aren’t going to any conference better than the A-10. Our past basketball accomplishments are only going to be relevant for so long…

Metro

The A-10 and CAA joined forces under the CAA flag in football. This is the last year for A-10 football under that moniker.
