49er to play baseball at next level

Erik Walker got drafted in the 20th round of the first year player draft this past week by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. This is exciting because Erik will most likely get the opportunity to play and show his worth.

Only two other notable 49er players playing baseball at the next level right now in Jason Stanford and John Maine. I beleive Joey Hammond is playing in double-A Reading right now as well.

Stanford is playing for the Buffalo Bisons and they happen to be coming into town to play the Charlotte Knights this comign week (Fri-Sun) Be sure to check charlotteknights.com for the probable pitching rotations and come cheer our former 49er pitching stud!

sorry to get everyone’s hopes up Stanford was placed on the DL May 1. My guess was to make room on the roster. Minor League teams can place guys on the DL whenever they please for however long they please. So probably no Stanford in Charlotte…Damn

Sounds like he had a great career. No one has talked much about him here when projecting who would get drafted. What’s the low-down?

Last year he had an unbelievable season. This year he was up and down. Some people felt he would get drafted last year and didn’t. He has a decent fastball with good breaking stuff.

AA Reading? is that a Phillies farm club?

The best way to find affiliates is to go to mlb.com, and go to a team page (say, the Phillies). Click “Roster” and one of the drop-down menu options is Minor League Affiliates. It tells you all of them for each MLB team, plus links to their schedules, rosters etc. I’m too lazy to go do it for Reading right now.

Hopefully Walker can advance beyond rookie ball fairly quickly. It’s a lot harder for those rookies to hit with the wood, plus he has a nasty breaking ball, so that should all come together for him and he could move to short-A level quickly, I think.

In his pro debut he pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th, with 5 strikeouts, to get a win. He walked a guy and hit another, but gave up no hits.

He is currently 2-0 with 1 save in 3 games played. He has given up 1 hit in 4 innings total and stuck out 7, hasn’t walked anybody since his first game.

He won’t be staying with that team for long if he keeps it up, should get up to A ball soon.

That is short-season A ball. He went straight there, bypassing the Rookie League. He could move up to full-season A ball, though. I think that’s what you meant, probably.
