STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut withh host Charlotte in the NCAA Division I men’s quarterfinals on Sunday at 1 p.m., playing their 24-game unbeaten streak at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium on the line.
The streak dates back to 2009.

[/b]The Huskies have a Long Island connection, or rather a Brentwood one as sophomore defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste and coach Ray Reid hail from that town.
Third-seeded Connecticut has reached the quarterfinals for the 11th time in program history and the first since 2007. The Huskies lost a heartbreaker at home to Virginia Tech that season, 1-0.
The match will be the first meeting between Connecticut and Charlotte.
UConn has advanced after defeating No. 23 Monmouth, 2-1, in the second round on Nov. 20 and No. 24 James Madison, 3-0, this past Sunday. Both games were played at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
Sunday’s contest against James Madison was a complete performance by the 2011 UConn squad and was played in front of nearly 5,000 fans. Junior captain Carlos Alvarez notched the game-winning goal and an assist. Senior All-American Tony Cascio also finished with a goal and an assist on the day.
Charlotte advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory at home over Furman in the first round followed by a 3-1 upset over No. 11-seeded UAB on the road. The 49ers went on to host defending national champion Akron in the third round. Charlotte came away with a 1-0 victory to earn the right to face UConn with a trip to the College Cup on the line.
The 49ers were ranked 14th in the last National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll with a 16-4-2 record and is led by Atlantic-10 rookie of the year Guiseppe Gentile (nine goals, two assists). The 49ers have outscored opponents 40-19 with sophomore goalkeeper Klay Davis starting all 22 games and earning eight shutouts. Davis boasts a 0.83 goals-against average and a .747 save percentage
Charlotte comes into the game tied with the most goals scored in the tournament after three rounds. The 49ers and Louisville are tied with seven goals apiece.

That was one guy. He was way out of line in saying that, but a few of our fans started yelling back at him. That, too, was unnecessary. Had you observed with your eyes as well as your ears, you’d have noticed that as soon as the guy opened his mouth, one of the senior Akron students grabbed him by his shirt and let him know that that type of behavior would not be tolerated.
Don’t judge a fanbase by one person, we’ve got some cats that I’m sure we wouldn’t be so proud of either…

My nephew told me about the mouthing session. I was also told by a few alumni back at the Normbulance. The half naked Akron hobo went outside and fondled one of the statue in front of Transamerica. Had I witnessed it, he may not make it back to his bus ( I am not an agressive type of person, but I guess a few years in England and a few too many soccer matches made a hooligan out of me) ;D
BTW, whatever happened to the rent-a-cop crew? Were they there for a fashion show? Oops! my bad. . . . they were too busy shoving doughnuts in their faces instead of doing their jobs. ;D
There are always a few good one. But, the Zippers student section did shout “get off the field” when one of our player was down toward “bottom of the 9th”. ;D A few zippers were laying on the field crying at the end of regulation was the golden chance for a few alumni and I to return the favor. I am sorry lad but you missed out on all the action. ;D
As far as the cops go, I’m pretty sure they did what they were asked to do. At the AD’s request, they were there to make sure no students rushed the field (while the team was urging us to do so) despite the fact that UNCW rushed our field two years ago.
When I mentioned this to a certain member of our Athletic Department staff, he snapped at me that they “got them off the field immediately” and told me to “shut my mouth.” Funny to hear that claim, considering when I complained to the crowd control authorities about the students rushing our fielda few years ago, I was told that it wasn’t my field and that I should shut up and go home.

I understand why they wanted to keep us in the stands. I have no problem with it, and wouldn’t have had a problem with him saying something a bit more… polite, maybe?
Instead, I get snapped at. I make a lot of sacrifices to be at every game I can, and I am the one that the AD goes to with concerns about the student section… be they legitimate or otherwise. I don’t mind it at all… in fact, I’m happy about it… and I don’t really want any recognition for it (other than a way to put it on my resume… still trying to figure that out) but I would certainly like to be spoken to with a little more respect than I was after the game.
Looks like Lew has gone from harrassing opposing baseball coaches to trying to incite a riot after a soccer match. (just kidding with you Lew)
It baffles me that the AD would NOT want the fans storming the field after that victory.
Winning is going to be good if we beat UCONN which I think we have a chance!!! ^-^

I wasn’t even aware “storming” was a thought (I sat with my gf and parents in the adjacent section a few rows up). I’m glad we didn’t. “Storming” on a field that size looks silly unless you have 10,000 people doing it (i.e. Iowa State upset of Oklahoma).

I didn’t know UNCW rushed our field 2 years ago. I left when it was obvious we wouldn’t catch up on PK’s. If I had seen UNCW fans storm, y’all might have had to bail me out of jail for kicking someone’s a55!
I saw from the pics, there was a 2nd Akron Fan who had no clothes, except his boxers.

Dynamite freshman Giuseppe Gentile delivered the goods once again with a game-winning goal to send Charlotte to its first Elite Eight since 1996. Gentile is the team's leading scorer and will have his hands full against physical Connecticut and goalkeeper Andre Blake.
