49ers Men's Soccer ⚽
I’ll have to pull out the media guide to check the exact dates, but most certainly we were ranked higher in previous seasons. In the mid 90s, before the college cup season, we had back to back years where we were ranked in the top 5 for a good portion of the season. I was at the So carolina game where we knocked them off (top 5) on their field, and got pushed up to I think as high as #2 on one poll, and #3 on the more popular ones. We were an absolute powerhouse those two seasons. It was kind of disappointing that we didn’t advance further in the NCAA tournament until about 2-3 years later when we made the final four.

Prior to that, I am fairly certain that one year when Gabe & Carlos Garcia were on the team we were ranked top 20 for most of the season - I think around #17. It’s hard to remember exactly because there were so many polls back then - like 3 or 4. We lost to the tarholes that season in the 1st round of the tournament - and yes, i was at the game. one of the garcia bros got absolutely taken down from behind, in the box, on a breakaway, and a small, but vocal group of Niner fans could only watch increduously as the ref swallowed his whistle and stuck his head in the sand. A similar play happened a little while later. Tarholes went on to win that game 1-0. It was eerily similar to the officiating in many US men’s team games of the past few years.

I drank a lot of beer that night, and then deposited it pretty liberally on as many tarhole campus buildings as I could. Damnit.
Did anyone else on the board make the trip up to crapel hill for that game? I’m nauseous just thinking about it again.

Thi team IS fun to watch, along with being good.

Now, I have to ask this question and I noticed it was mentioned by others earlier in the thread. WHY IS THE LOCAL PAPER IGNORING THE LOCAL NINTH RANKED TEAM? This team deserves better. People in Charlotte need to know about them. I think that is a fair question.

I watched us play at Maryland. We were definitely entertaining to watch. We had a short stretch in the game where we played like crap and that ultimately cost us that game. We were solid for most of the match though.

I’m assuming with an RPI or 12, even if we manage to not win the A10, we’ll probably make the tournament? I know we missed it last year, but I have no idea what our RPI was then.

My memory is hazy, but some of my cross country teammates and I made the drive up to Chapel Hill for the game. We were late leaving, so we were doing about 90+ most of the way up and made it just in time. I don’t know how we didn’t get a ticket because the speed limit was only 55 back then. Don’t remember much about the game, just bummed we lost.

Monday in one of my classes the topic of athletics on campus came up and why more isn’t done to encourage student attendance etc…

I stood up and said, raise your hands if you know as of this moment that our men’s soccer team is ranked top 10 according to one poll and top 15 according to every other poll in the country. Two people raised their hands and the rest (about 15 or so) had this puzzled look on their.

We all know why the paper is doing what they are doing (tarhole bias) but the problem is much deeper than that when enrolled students have no idea.

#17 Charlotte is home hosting Xavier tomorrow night at 7:00PM. It’s also Senior week-end. I hope some of you could come out to support our great team.

It’s Game Day. Let’s send the home with an L.

MSoccer - 49ers defeated Xavier 1-0 behind a goal by Donnie Smith at the 99:27 mark. 49ers improve to 11-3-2 on the season.

It was definitely a tough one in the rain (second half). We missed out on tons of chances. But, I take this “shut out” any night of the week.

It’s Halloween ya’ll, us Niners did get some nice treat (musketeers). Let’s get ready for UD cryers. We are back on track for a nice run. . . starting tonight. See some of you crazies @1:00 PM Sunday afternoon.

It’s game day ! ! !

Let’s take care of Dayton.
;D

MSoccer - 49ers defeat Dayton 1-0 behind a Tyler Gibson goal. Charlotte is now 7-0 at home.

Ok, I couldn’t make the game, but I just got through looking at some replays. Someone please explain how we can be offside on an apparent goal when Dayton had a man behind the goal line. We seem to lose a goal about every third game because of some mystery call like that. If I don’t understand the rule, someone enlighten me.

There need to be two players between the last man and the goal when the pass is made. Usually the goalie is one of those two (and the last fullback is the other), but on some plays, the goalie gets caught out so that there’s no longer two defenders.

Either that, or the linesman totally blew the call. That happens too.

I really like our chances this year and hope to see the team back at Transamerica for a few more games.

Any updates on whether we have been approved to host NCAA games? Judy mentioned during the NNG pre-madness party that they were working on that.

Assuming of course we make the NCAAs.

#10 won again (2-1) tonight at SLU (double OT). Kirkbride Aidan scored 2 goals. His 2 goals for the regular season were what we needed tonight. Let’s bring home the A-10 Championship. We love to see you guys back at Transamerica for a couple more games.

I watched this game from the 2nd half and couldn’t believe how good our guys looked. They had trouble putting the ball in the net, but don’t let the score fool you, they dominated. I guess that’s nature and part of the excitement of soccer - teams can be getting outplayed but still be in a game with a chance to win.

The game was as dramatic and crazy as both games last week-end. We had tons of chances and dominated the whole game. But, as you were sharing, the score doesn’t tell the true story. I am glad that our “secret weapon” Aidan Kirkbride decided to save his only two goals of the season for SLU.
