A-10 Mid Major

The Charlotte Observer has the A-10 listed as a mid-major today. It seems that based on the number of NCAA bids that the A-10 only gets two per year and that makes them a mid-major. CUSA is a major, but I would guess after this year they drop to a mid-major in basketball. Hopefully with all the goods things happening in the A-10 that it is considered a power conference after we join.

Well, we should certainly be adding another NCAA Tournament bid to the A-10’s resume each year.

I guess the sports staff didn’t get Mike P’s memo about certain ACC teams being mid-major either.

Really? I never heard anybody say any Acc team were a mid major. That pretty funny. Way to go Mike!!!

To me, you're a mid-major if you don't regularly make the NCAA tournament, and on the borderline unless you advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament regularly, at least 4 times every 10 years. - Mike Persinger, 1/10/05

What CUSA team would you most like for the Niners to maintain their rivalry with after the move to the A-10?

I talked to David about it. He and I disagree on definitions, but he makes the point that it’s easier to classify by conference. He doesn’t agree with me that Virginia Tech is mid-major (at this point). It’s his feature, so he has to be comfortable with his definition. I deferred to him after listening to his argument. My opinion is only one in my department. Certainly others have input, and I consider it the sign of a good supervisor that I’m willing to listen to that input. My opinion would never have been public had it not been for this message board. Welcome to the process.

Thanks for the info Mike. You can go ahead and fired David since he did not take your opinion. David should always take the opinion of the boss.

I think mid-major is a stretch. Try irrelelvant.

Per Mike,

Mid Majors in the ACC

Miami, Fla. St, NC State, UVA, VA Tech, BC

In the Big East:

Everybody but UConn, Pitt and Syracuse

In the Pac 10:
Everyone except AZ, UCal, and Stanford

etc.

Sorry Mike, you gotta do better than this.

Last at large bid for Clemson and Va Tech ? Does any one have the stat on this one. Also has UVA received an at large bid this decade ?

Mike, I think we need more analysis of this mid-major thing. Who is the ultimate authority on it? It would be interesting to get different takes from a variety of people. Also, could you chime in with yours in print, please.

Once we’re in the A-10, we the conf should get 3 to 4 teams in. UMASS, GW, and Temple seem to be improving. Dayton, Xavier and St. Joes have been regulars of late. I think the new A-10 will be classified as a high-major within 3 years. I also hope to get a Big East - A-10 challenge going. That should draw a lot of interest in the Northeast. Glad we’re going to be part of a more regional league.
