A-10 recruiting

From Dustin Dow at the Cincy Enquirer…

Rise up

Xavier fans who can’t wait for Dante Jackson to arrive on campus will probably enjoy this month’s issue of Rise magazine, which feature’s Dante Jackson on the cover. For the record, I’ve never seen Rise magazine, but I have heard of it. Check out risemag.com to see for yourself. For those who don’t know, Jackson is a senior guard at Greenfield (OH) McClain, who’s scored more than 2,000 points in high school and is attending XU next season.

From my inbox:

"the combo guard talks about getting ready for an AAU tournament in Kentucky this past summer and glancing behind his bench to see the greatest player in NBA history, Michael Jordan, who was at the event to watch his sons, Jeffrey and Marcus, play. After getting over the excitement of seeing His Airness, Danté took to the court. He thought he had a decent game but didn’t do anything spectacular. Turns out he managed to impress even Jordan. “I was kind of listening to what he was saying (after the game), and he said, 'That No. 25 was pretty good,’” says Jackson. “I was wearing No. 25, but I was just going to keep on walking. He then waved me over to talk. He said I was a really good player, and he said I reminded him of him when he was my age. That was the ultimate compliment.”

And Bernie Miklasz from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch takes Brad Soderberg to task concerning SLU recruiting:

Link: Billikens pay price for Soderberg’s futile recruiting

BTW, since he wrote that, Saint Louis has received verbal commitments from 6-3 G Anthony Mitchell of East St. Louis, IL (14.5 ppg, 11.1 rpg) and 6-7 G/F Marcus Relphorde of Chicago (13 ppg, 6 rpg, 3.5 apg).

Impossible, there is absolutely no way that you can expect any coach anywhere to pick up talent to play in the a10. Especially in a location like Xavier where the Big 10 and Big East flood the market.

I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not. I hope it is, since Xavier recruits at a pretty high level:

It’s not unusual for Xavier to pick up a couple 4-star recruits in a year. And it looks like they will land Kenny Frease.

definate sarcasm

xavier could be pretty nasty for the next few years if they pull in even a couple of those guys

Really!? Because I could smell the sarcasm dripping from that post the second I walked in my door.

Give Xavier 3 - 5 years and they’ll return to the continuous at-large bids like in the 90’s

What the hell do you mean by “return… 90’s”?

Here’s their records since the 2000-2001 season (NCAA tournament seeding):

23-7 (probably 7-10)
21-10 (14)
17-12
23-10 (7)
25-5 (3)
24-5 (7)
21-7 (11)

They’ve only missed the tournament once this decade. Don’t forget that they also made an Elite 8 run during that stretch, and had the national player of the year. They are exactly what I want and expect us to be.

he said at-large bids, two of those were automatic bids weren’t they (they wouldn’t have made the tournament without them)
