Overall a great effort by our team. So many factors played into the loss.
A few more to throw in in addition to Plav, Iti and Withers huge ft misses, Withersâ 5 seconds, refs terrible call, Lutz Tech, Withers Tech, and coachâs bad play calls at the end:
-Eddieâs fumble as he made his move in one of the TOâs.
-Mitchellâs looping pass over the head of a posting Withers.
-Withers entry pass to Iti in the high-low.
Guys, there were so many things that factored into this 55 minutes, 203 point basketball game. We have to bounce back and win at Davidson.
The way I see it is the Plav and Withers FTs ware the ultimate factor (you canât expect FTâs from Iti, but form Plav and Withers you definately do). The other things you mentioned definately contributed to the loss, but were minor compared to the FTs missed by Plav/Withers.
I would also add coaches decision to not play Goldwire and even nance more down the stretch of regulation and all 3 OTâsâŚif for anything to rest the starters, plus I think Goldwire is the real deal.
Well said Lefty, all of those things go along with our season long inability to close out games. We have too many upperclassmen to be losing games like this. FT shooting is an obvious problem, but if we played smart basketball at the end and in OT we would be discussing a victory right now.
We can either bounce back in a big way or let this loss keep up down for the rest of the year, it was such an emotional game that the guys will either use it to feed off of the rest of the season or they will hang their heads and come out sloppy at Davidson and we will probably be looking at a barely above .500 team heading into conference play(if we keep playing like this late in games we WILL lose at Davidson, Indiana and Santa Clara).

I think the way they bounce back wednesday after what they just went through may set tone for rest of season, that is going to be a tough game at Belk. I fear they will be flat and davidson will be on their game.

Yeah, Goldwire and Nance could have helped down the stretch. I was really surprised not to see Goldwire. The kid plays hard and isn't afraid.
Lutz didnât give a long talk after the game. In closing, he told them to âstick togetherâ. I think it was a smart move. No sense in beating them up over it. They already felt bad enough. Wednesday is huge. We have to come out with energy and dominate the glass.

If you think you only have 5 minutes left to decide whether you are going to win or lose, you have to keep your best players out there. If you know you are going to 3 overtimes, then of course you put in the backups to get the starters a rest, but it's hard to fault Lutz for keeping his best players out there in OT.
Good point, but after watching Plavich's ft shooting I had just as soon have Goldwire out there in some situations.
I agree with the âhindsightâ point in regards to Goldwire not playing and not knowing the future, but for me I was asking several times during the final 10 minutes of regulation and every OT why Goldwire wasnât out there atleast some. The kid only played 13 minutes, you canât expect Plav to hit fade away 25 foot threes when heâs tired, takes fresh legs to do that.

What NinerOne said.
I like Plav and am glad he is on this team, but if he is as cold as he was after regulation - put in Goldwire. He gives you a better defensive presence, has shown he can hit from the outside, can pass and is a better free throw shooter. You want Plav in for the final shot? Great, but give the kid a breather, he was running on fumes.
I couldnât find the breakdown for Plavich but look at our team 3-Pt. shooting by period. Plavich was on fire early. A little more rest and he should be able to keep it up late in the game.
2-11 is just ridiculous. No way he should take that many if they arenât dropping.
I agree he was hitting early, but no way Bobby can keep a guy out there who is shooting 3-17 (that is too many shots for a cold shooter) when we have another guy on the bench who hardly got a chance to play.

No, thatâs the team 3-pt %. Team was 10-29, Plavich 5-14.
I thought that seemed a little high. Like, waaay more shots than I remember him taking too high. I havenât checked the stats on the game yet.
I know he had the only 3 ball in OT, but I donât remember him hitting one in the second half. Doesnât mean he didnât.
Regardless, Bobby ran those boys ragged. What good is a deep bench if you donât use it? Another problem for PLav, tired legs makes fts a lot harder to shoot. Heâs not a good ft shooter in general, but when your shot is off and your legs are tired, itâs hard to hit fts.
Leemire and Chris Nance need to play, they are on the team for a reason and have earned minutes. Sure, they donât deserve a starters amount of minutes, but at least let them spell your starters long enough that they can be ready to perform when you need them to.

He hit one 3 pointer in the 2nd half. I do wonder why Lutz didnât put Leemire in with Mitch more in the 2nd half. Plavichâs shots were falling short of the rim in the OT, which I have always been told thatâs a sign that your legs are about to go out.

In post-game, Lutz did say he probably should have used Goldwire for Plavich late in the game. But like sadi above, no one had any idea we were going an extra 15 minutes. I think we'll see Goldwire inserted to spell Plav more often in the second half.
