Interesting piece from St. Louis Post-Dispatch sportswriter Bernie Miklasz on why Majerus may have considered SMU job:

On the other hand, Majerus is frustrated by SLU's spartan ways of traveling to road games. The Billikens take few chartered flights, which means that the players usually fly commercial and end up wasting three days to play one road game. That interferes with their classes and academic routine. The inefficient travel also disrupts the basketball regimen.

Majerus has also reached into his own pocket to provide a suitable salary for at least one assistant coach (Jim Crews), and he personally funded a significant portion of the cost so SLU could go on a valuable preseason exhibition tour of Canada.

The financial commitment by the SLU administration still isn’t what it should be. It isn’t easy for Majerus to get things done. Maybe he’s tired of constantly having to barter with the SLU administration over small things.

Seems risky to give Majerus a big contract to rebuild a program. Though his mother lived to 84, haven’t seen a picture of her, but doubt she carried weight like her son. And Helmut Kohl is still alive at 82.

Myron Medcalf lists his top 10 hires in men’s hoops, which includes the “present” (#2 URI - Dan Hurley) and the “future” (#7 Tulsa - Danny Manning). Also includes sometime Niner opponent Winthop at #5 (Pat Kelsey).
