Aaron Baker

Longtime 49er supporter Aaron Baker passed away last week, and I attended the funeral today. The program was well-represented, with Judy Rose, Bobby Lutz, Darrin Spease, Celia Laney, Mike Hummer, and a number of the other Athletics staff in attendance. Bobby Kummer was there, too, and speakers included Frank Jones and Dave Taylor.

Aaron and Joan Baker have been among the most loyal 49er fans for longer than some of you have been alive. When I was in school from 1973-77, they were there at every game, and you can probably count the number of home games they’ve missed since then on one hand. They also traveled to lots of away games and tournaments. Great folks, and Aaron will be sorely missed.

Condolences to the family… sorry to hear about that.

Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Anyone have a picture from a game, that he is in? Just curious to put a face with a name, sounds like someone we might all recognize if we saw him.

Wish I’d known this, I’d have come down for the funeral. The Bakers owned Baker Texaco on Independence, just east of the Coliseum. Fine people, they were some of the first supporters of the program I met when started in the athletic department back in 1976. Aaron loved 49er basketball!

They always made sure to speak to me whenever I attended a game, always raved over my sons too. It will be strange not discussing basketball officiating ever again with Aaron. Those were some good discussions as you can imagine; he never knew a good official but he knew each one by name and that was long before they were seen on TV every night.

Better than fans, they are huge 49er supporters. Aaron, you will be missed. :unhappy:

Sad indeed. Back in 1981 I had an '80 Sunbird with a crappy transmission that I had let AAMCO work on for 3 weeks and they STILL could not fix it. I asked Mr. Baker to tow it to his Texaco station and repair it if he could. He had the car for one day!!! And fixed it at a fraction for what AAMCO charged. Thanks, Mr. Baker for that, and being a loyal NINER supporter. We will miss you.
