Congrats, Aaron!!!
Side note…I had no idea there were this many rounds. Wow, how many left? And really, do you need this many?
at least 40. teams can draft until they don’t want to draft, IIRC
there are 50 rds now
10 years ago they would go 70 or so.
are they needed? Piazza was drafted in the 62nd
Do the math, in one organization there are MLB, AAA, AA, A+, A, short A, rookie, domican A, so its about 250 players x 30, so there are 7500 pro players.
50 rds x 30 teams = 1500 draftees, 500 will NOT SIGN
so you inject 1000 new players and cut 1000 every yr

Thanks for the math, I was trying to figure this out early today.
Who goes to Donicam A? Is this something new and do the stats count (on record file)…don’t remember seeing the stats in books, cards, etc.
There is a league in the Dominican for kids signed out of the Caribbean. The Pirates just opened a facility there that has mostly 17 - 19 year old kids playing their first pro ball. All are spanish speakers and most are Dominican. There are also some guys from Mexico, PR, Panama and Veneuzuala on that team.
There is also a league in Veneuzuala, but most of the kids there are a little older and many have graduated from the Dominican league.
With the exception of Puerto Rico, in all of these other countries, players are exempt from the draft and may sign with whoever they want on their 16th (Check me if I’m wrong Metro) birthday. A lot of these guys are considered washed up if they haven’t been signed by the time they are 19, thus all the age scams that have made the news over the last 10 years.

this is the best list of each league:

And yes the Domicans are 90% of the Latin market, sign as free agents at 16. Problem is there are no birth certificates so they all lie on age. Thats why big Pappy is catching heat right now. Tejada was busted for it…they all do it. Its a huge advantage, if you are 20 but say you are 16, you look like a freakin stud with tons of potential. I’d say the average Dominican pro has cheated by 2 yrs, and age is gold when you are speaking in terms of “time to develope.”
Congrats to Aaron. I wish him the best. Aaron and Rob were both mentioned in an article in the Winston paper about all the college players in the state taken in the draft. (no, this is not criticism of the O)
We may have the best state in the country for college baseball.

Seems fitting.
