I’m already a little tired of hearing how Charlotte seems “privileged” to have
a chance to play the ACC. I know some of you don’t want to even give this
topic “air time”, but here’s my 2 cents worth. We really have played or will
play lots of ACC teams in the recent past or very soon.
Wake Forest (today and 2 seasons from now in Charlotte);
N. C. State (blew 'em out a few years ago in Raleigh and of course, last
year wasn’t pretty);
UNC-Chapel Hill (took 'em to overtime twice);
Miami (done pretty well v. them);
Va. Tech (been there done that);
Boston College (who?);
Florida State (been a long time since we’ve played 'em)
Virginia (been a long time since we’ve played 'em, but Laieto is the coach
there now who coached DePaul and he’s been to Halton-how about
a game coach?);
Clemson (been a long time since we’ve played 'em, but Nickelberry is there
now-how about a game coach?);
Maryland (been a long time since we’ve played 'em, but Moxley is there
now-how about a game coach?);
Georgia Tech (go figure); and
Duke (whatever).
You say we’ve played most of the teams recently or very soon, but then you go on to say 80% of the teams we have not played, or at least not in a very long time…hopefully the coaches that we’ve played in the past will schedule something with us, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
We played Duke a few years ago at Cameron. Jarvis had a great game but I think that’s also the game he hurt his ankle. Was a 1-game deal but not sure it will happen again in the future. Don’t really care either. Too many great teams around the country to worry about Tobacco Road as much as some of us do. I’d like to see us get more games against the SEC, Big 10 and maybe the Pac 10.
If we make Wake look bad today, count on not having another ACC school schedule us for a LONGGGGGGGGG time, simply to much for them to loose. They look at us on the same level as UNC-W.

How long have you been here? The Cavaliers have never played the 49ers and likely never will.
Boston College - 1-0, last game 12/9/77
Clemson - 1-3, last game 1/8/94
Duke - 0-2, last game 1/18/92
Florida State - 2-2, last game 12/19/92
Georgia Tech - 0-4, last game 2/6/86
Maryland - 0-1, last game 12/22/75
Miami - 4-2, last game 12/15/02
NC State - 2-6, last game 3/18/05
UNC-Chapel Hill - 0-2, last game 12/12/99
Virginia - 0-0
Virginia Tech - 6-8, last game 12/4/99
Wake Forest - 1-4, last game 12/14/87

Good point. It seems counterproductive to be so preoccupied with the ACC.

If we have a chance we need to make the deacon demon look really baaaaad. It didn’t stop us a few years ago with State. If they want revenge they will have to fit themselves in our schedule in the future. And, who cares about the rest of the ACC.
Too many great teams around the country to worry about Tobacco Road as much as some of us do. I'd like to see us get more games against the SEC, Big 10 and maybe the Pac 10.
But the ACC and tobacco road is in our face on a daily basis, not the Pac 10. This is what the majority here complain about…why does the Observer cover the ACC teams more than the home team… Start beating the ACC teams, not the SEC, Big 10, Pac 10…, and people really start to take notice. And if they don’t schedule us because we beat them…oh well, it is out of Charlotte’s hand at that point.
I’d like to see a schedule with more quality teams from other conferences, BUT, I would much rather get the chance to play an ACC team. Look at the Wake board, they don’t think Charlotte is anything but a scrub team not fit to be on the same court with them. To me, that is the start of something special and that is why I would rather play an ACC team, especially one in-state, and not some of the other quality teams from other conferences. Smack the bully in our neighborhood first, and then look for one somewhere else.
i’d love to see lutz get us a game vs oklahoma or michigan state(after the iraq deal)
florida would be nice…or oklahoma state…i think we have a better chance getting a 1-1 or a 2-1 with one of these guys, and we just need to stop messing around with trying to get a shot at the acc…its really overrated mostly cause we live in acc territory
There are inherent problems with playing some of the power conference schools.
For example, Duke or Carolina will not give you a home and home. They would want to showcase their teams to the metro are and play at Bobcats Arena, like we will reportedly do with Wake Forest year after next.
So if you do that, you’re playing probably a 2-for-1 with the 1 at Bobcats Arena.
Also, you are probably going to take your lumps and lose 75% of the time. That list (see above) includes far more losses than wins.
So the question also becomes, do you want to see a team that is 20-9 or 19-10(potentially) or a team that is 18-11 against a better schedule?
And with that better schedule, you then get less games at Halton and very likely vs. crappier opponents (if you’re going to play a big name ACC school, you’re likely not going to ALSO have the Halton games vs. Indiana, instead you’ll get more vs. Asheville-types).
the conference landscape has/will drastically impact how some of the programs are positioned in these Supersized leagues.
Unfortuneately for some of these schools a 2nd tier on the athletic front may emerge in these leagues and they will have to do things with their programs to standout in these supersized conferences.
I would say someone at Wake is recoqnizing this, maybe their coach, and jumped at the chance to have a well attended game in an NBA arena in the states largest city.
I would suspect they would want to build some out of conference rivalry games as much as we do.

All valid points but I see it like this: Playing ACC teams, no matter where, can only help this program. Gives it more exposure (in-state especially-where it is needed most) and helps play quality competition. If we lose, it is a good loss most years and really won’t hurt the NCAA chances. Look at this year, we may go 19-10 or 20-9 but what quality wins or loses do we have? Losing at HOME by 17 to Indiana is not quality. I’m not saying play the entire ACC, just a couple a year if possible. If we win, great, if we lose, it is a good loss since like you said, it probably won’t be at home. I’m not familiar with how scheduling is done but having 2 acc teams instead of one I doubt would have any effect on the Indiana game, just get rid of a cupcake. Beating a cupcake does less for us, in my opinion, than losing to a quality team.
I understand that playing other quality teams in other conferences will help the program also. I grew up here which goes to why I am biased with kicking the big boys in our neighborhood first if possible, and then looking out of it. I don’t care where we play them. And that is probably why I am not hired as the person who schedules the games.
As a famous niner fan who bleeds green said once…“Smacketh them first I would.”

If we ever do a 2 for 1 deal the first game better be in Charlotte. That way we don’t have to worry about the other school backing out or buying out either of the remaining games. UVA did that UR recently I believe.
It may not matter but Prosser said in his post-game remarks that he had rather not play a team like Charlotte during the conference season. Guess what, that return game to the Queen City is off.
But it could be back on under this condition: rumor has it that the Prosser house in Winston-Salem was sold earlier this week. So the next coach might agree to that return game.
