An injury update, 12/6

I think our rotation right now without EJ is working pretty good. Hope DA is healed up for Saturday night.

Thanks Mike.

How about redshirting EJ? We do lose Curtis & Nance next year. We might be a little thin at the 4 otherwise.

I have been thinking that for a while!

Sorry to hear about E. J.

Today Duquesne announced that it has lost one its better players for the season. If the vultures weren’t already circling Danny Nee in Pittsburgh, they are now!

BTW, Mike, we played the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (Sun Belt Conference) last Saturday, not Lafayette College (Easton, PA - Patriot League).

Now that is an interesting idea about a medical redshirt for EJ.

It would be tough. He has already burned his last year of elegibility and applying for a medical exemption would be rolling the dice. Considering his injury, I doubt it would be granted.

Has he? How many games can you play before you hit the max for a season?

Answering my own question. It’s technically called a hardship waiver:
In Division I, a student-athlete can apply for a hardship waiver if a season-ending injury or illness occurs in the first half of the season. The student-athlete, however, must not have participated in more than two contests or dates of competition or 20 percent (whichever is greater) of the institution’s scheduled contests.
He’s borderline from a games perspective, since he’s played in 6 of approx 29 or 30 scheduled games. Depends on if they count the 1st round of the A10 tourney as a scheduled game. If they do, he’d be ok there.

But the serious illness or injury requirement - no idea. Not sure how much workable room there is.

Also important, that I didn’t know:
These waivers may not be officially requested and granted until the completion of the season in which the student-athlete was injured
So of course you can get a redshirt year for being injured, but can you get one for just being a flat out TERRIBLE basketball player…

Mitchell received one during his true freshman year after playing a little at the outset of the season.

However, with Mitchell, we knew that he would at least have 3 more years of eligibility if not 4. With E. J. he may sit out the entire year and then not receive another year and be done. That is a huge gamble.

Actually, the Ragin Cajuns prefer to be called Louisiana, not La-Layafette.

How true. When the University of Southwestern Louisiana tried to change it to the University of Louisiana, the LSU folks had a fit and made them add the “at Lafayette” part. Makes me think of the time when NC State was changed to UNC at Raleigh. The NCSU people went ballistic and thus we ended up officially with North Carolina State University at Raleigh.

Technically, he has used one year of eligibility and is not eligible for a redshirt the minute he steps foot on the court of a regular season game.

The medical exemption or hardship is not really a redshirt but can still be granted after playing less than 20% of the games.

The first round of the A10 does not count.
