Andy Katz

I know no one here likes Katz, but to add to the dislike I was jus reading his “weekly word” crap. And in the part where he says rising and falling teams, he says Central Conn. is a rising team for beating Santa Clara, Yale is a rising team for beatin Santa Clara, and Santa Clara is a falling team for losing to both of them…Yet no Charlotte mentions, at all, saying we beat both Yale and Central Conn. Now true all three of those teams really arn’t anything to brag about, but he could have mentioned we were there, and won it all…bastard  .

Go Niners!

On the contrary cowbell,

I think Katz is one of the more favorable talking heads when it comes to the Niners. He, Bilas and Rece Davis have always trumpeted our cause, while the likes of Richard Phelps and Chris Fowler barely know we exist.

Here is his “Weekly Word” column after the Alabama game. Sure, he was critical of the fans, and our FT shooting, but he shoud have been.

I can’t begin to count all the Niner games he’s been to in the last few years. You think Phelps is ever setting foot in Halton Arena?

Cowbell, do I detect a hint of sarcasm in your post?

actually cowbell a lot of posters on here like Katz

I am another who usually doesn’t have any problem with Katz. While CenConn and Yale get kudos for winning games against Santa Clara, don’t know that we deserve anything for having beaten them to win the Cable Car Classic. If anything, Katz could have given us a down arrow for not blowing out the competition!

Katz has positive on the 49ers almost always. Perhaps he was wearing the blue tinted shades still in his references to Santa Clara, they obviously are not that good.

No personal offense meant to you NINERcowbellplayer, but I get this strange image of you each time I see your name beside a post. Enjoy…

I think Katz was making his comments from a standpoint that was relative to the previously perceived strength of Yale and CCSU. So, yes, their wins over Santa Clara were noteable (relatively speaking), whereas our wins were not so noteable due to our perceived strength at that time. Like if UNCA beats Memphis (WOW!), but when we beat Memphis, it’s expected.

I made the comment about people not liking Katz because the last time I saw him mentioned on here he there were numerous posts bashing him(although there were more against Dick V.).

I know we should have won the Cable Car Classic by a lot and we didn’t, but in the same respect Yale took a very good, and ranked every other week, Boston College team into overtime. Not to compare ourselves to Duke or Tarheels, but if they had won that tourney he would have said something. Now I’m not saying we should be a “rising team” for beating Yale or C.CONN, but no where on the ESPN besides under our own page was there anything about us winning that touney. ANd when you read Katz article it looks like Yale won the touney.

Either way I’m sorry to offend those Katz fans out there, I just thought it was interesting that he mentioned everyone else that played in the cable car classic except the team that won it.

insert from Katz’s word after Bama game:

“With our schedule, we’re not going to go 10-1 or 9-2 in the non-conference,” Lutz said. “That’s not the type of schedule we play.”

Thanks for the optimistic attitude bobby…

Would you rather him had said “we better go 10-1 or 9-2 or else it would be a huge dissappointment, our players will have to play very poorly in order not to win 9 or 10 games” He said they sitting at 3-2 with 6 OOC games left, 2 on the road and 2 on neutral court, it would have been a lot to ask to tell the players that they HAD to win 6 straight games(a longer streak than we have had in the last 3 years). He has to try to put positive spins on everything whenever he can.

As for Katz, he puts us in his columns quite a bit. We were actually in his previous “Weekly Watch” twice(Plavich was a runner-up for Player of the Week and the team was runner up for Team of the Week). That and he came down to see the Bama game on his own, he wasn’t comminating or planning a big write up about the game, he came because he knew it would be a good game(I’m sure ESPN floated the bill, but all they got out of it was a few sentences in that article linked earlier in this post). He’s one of the least biased guys ESPN has, and he knows a lot about teams outside of the ACC which can’t be said for most of ESPN’s tv guys.
