What happened to the Sport MBA program was that the new Dean of the Belk College, Dean Mazzola, felt that sports business was not a relevant industry and was not a value to the University. In reality, however, not only was the program certified, but was ranked as one of the top 6 Sport MBA programs in the country. The program was also attracting top notch students from prestigious undergraduate institutions from all over the country and had over 150 applicants for the 2011 academic term, prior to the program being placed âon holdâ. With its growing notoriety, the Dean still did not see its âfeasibilityâ, and viewed the program as more of a strain than a chance for differentiation from other programs in the country (one that dons powder blue comes to mind). It is truly a shame that a program garnishing both local and national attention would be sacrificed because of one manâs clear lack of understanding and subjective opinion. If we, as a University, are ever going to be able to drop the UNC and âstake our claimâ, we have to start holding administration accountable for questionable decisions that jeopardize the long term future of this great University.
