Anyone Switched Mobile Phone Service From Sprint to Boost?

Have any of you made the switch from Sprint to Boost? A friend of mine was telling me about it and I’ve read about it some on the web. The $50 all inclusive plan looks good, and Boost has a nice phone for about what I paid for the crappy one I have with Sprint now. As always, the catch is the contract with Sprint. Mine expires in July 2010. I need to change the plan because it’s wearing on my budget and does not give me the service I want, but changing to a cheaper plan with Sprint requires extending the contract another 2 years. Anyways, what I want to know is if any of you have/had service with Boost and if anyone has made the switch from Sprint without having to pay the early termination fee. I’m tempted to switch regardless, because the $200 early termination fee can be recovered in 5 months with the cost savings difference between the two plans. I just wanted to see if there was an easier way.

I’ve heard good things about boost mobile. Only downside i’ve heard is the pay as you go stuff and all the ‘new’ charges every month. But if its the everything plan…

I may be wrong but I thought Boost was a branch of Nextel (now Sprint) to target an “urban” market.

my brother has Boost and loves it. $50 unlimited everything and yes it works of Sprint towers

I don’t know about the “urban market” part, but Nextel purchased Boost a while back and they are part of Sprint in some fashion. I don’t think that Sprint will simply allow me to switch without the penalty even though it’s their sister company I’m going too. So long as the service is good, which my phone and walkie-talkie service has been with Sprint, I think I’ll be switching. The monthly price and the contract crap is my problem with Sprint. I have the crappy internet instead of the full capability internet also, and am paying a bundle for it each month. Not sure if Boost’s internet capability is tremendously better, but it’s much cheaper and you can download Opera Mini to the phone I’m looking at to make the browsing experience better.

Boost uses Nextel technology, not Sprint. contrary to popular belief, the two are totally different networks and cannot work on each others concurrently. (ie. Sprint can roam on AT&T, but Boost cannot, and neither can Nextel. They cant even work on Sprints Network for that matter) Therefore your coverage may change if you currently have Sprint(Pre Merger Sprint.

Also, I dont believe Sprint will let you out of a contract service to switch over to a non contract service without paying a termination fee on your current contract. It would be stupid of them too, because you could get out of the sprint contract, use Boost one month then switch to AT&T and they loose you as a customer. Whereas if dont, then they have you in contract and either get the full contract term, or a cancellation fee.

Thanks for that info. My walkie-talkie worked better before I switched to the hybrid phone, but my phone service is better with Sprint than it was with the Nextel phone. Nextel’s service area is not as wide, and you are correct, I can bounce off of other towers with Sprint whereas Nextel you simply have no service in many rural areas. The main reason I need Sprint/Boost/Nextel service is for the walkie-talkie. I simply use it too much at work to be without it. Until now, I’ve been stuck with a hefty phone bill with no options. The reimbursement I get from work for using my personal phone there is less than 30% of my bill.

I kind of figured, but thanks. I think I’m going to talk to the Boost rep this week to make sure I can port my phone number over if I pay to get out of my Sprint contract. I prefer not to have to have to change it because notifying everyone of the change that I call for business will be a pain.

D@#$ it!!! Quit ruining my night!!!

Clarify, though. Boost says that I can bring my number on their website, but can I bring it if I buy out of my Sprint contract?

From the Boost FAQ page:
You can’t pick your new Boost Mobile® phone number, but if you have an existing phone number with a different carrier that you’d like to use as your Boost phone number, we can port that number to Boost - as long as you hold that active number with the other carrier.
You’ll need to make sure you can give us your information as it appears on the other carrier’s account for you. We’ll need the phone number; the account number; the account PIN or passwords associated with that account; your name and/or address as it appears on that account; and your social security number if you provided that to the other carrier. We’ll work with the other carrier to release that phone number so you can use it as your Boost phone number.
I ran it by the Sprint Store manager her in the University a few minutes ago…and she confirmed that as soon as your Sprint contract is terminated, your # goes into “Cell phone heaven”. Coming from any other carrier your golden.
