Are you optimistic about 49ers football under Albin?

If he doesn’t fire Fitch then he proves to be incompetent and needs to go.

Clidave, I understand what you are saying but IMHO, that is how beat down this fan base is. We have been bad for so long that we accept moral victory’s/losses in football and basketball. Everyone is measured on W’s and L’s. Close doesn’t count, it’s still a L. I manage a Global Sales Org, the only thing that matters is W’s. Rep’s don’t get quota credit/ paid for being in the final 2 of a sale or a RFP process and lost, no matter what the reason. These coaches and players get paid a lot of money, accountability and results are the only thing that matter. Those days have passed. You miss your quota 2 yrs in a row, you are gone. Just trying to figure what year 2 quota should be set at?

I’m extremely disappointed in this season. Albin has proven that he knows how to build a winner so he gets the benefit of the doubt for this season. There needs to be big step up for next year. Not saying 10 wins but we need to be competitive

We are playing Memphis, Tulane, UAB, and UNT next yr with new coaches, ECU with new OC, Navy with new QB so 5 plus wins should be the goal. It is going to take a few weeks for these schools to hire coaches and staff with portal 4 weeks away

Also, Ole Miss who knows what they are going to look like. All skilled players and coaches could be LSU tigers next year

All those teams are going to bowls except UAB? My only expectations for this past season were football being an embarrassment and Mike Hill being fired.

I don’t really care if insiders here were friendly with Hill. Getting friendly with underachievers is their choice as they celebrate together.

I don’t think it matters who our coach is unless we make some substantial institutional change.

Am I optimistic about Albin? absolutely. He’s proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he knows what he’s doing and he knows how to get it done at a g5 level. Additionally, were competing with a lot of teams undergoing a substantial amount of change at the moment.

Am I optimistic about Charlotte football? no. Not until I see evidence that things have changed. Our donors are tapped out. We have to both grow the donor base, and expand our corporate resources. We are competing with a lot of schools that have done this a lot better than we have, and the results reflect that.

I don’t understand the penalty complaint, we went from 93 to 73 penalties last season to this, that’s a significant improvement. Plus we didn’t have players separated by troopers because they were fighting each other. A much more disciplined team this year. I don’t remember a single illegal formation penalty

Flame away here, but I don’t understand the hate for Fitch at all. There is not a good play to call when the talent discrepancy is that large. We failed to rush for 1000 yards this season. That’s extremely difficult to do in college football, but points to the fact that we were completely outmanned, especially on that side of the ball.

I have been the last person defending our last several offensive coordinators, and I know some of them were awful, but this is totally illogical in my view. Sean McVay is not winning calling plays with that personnel.

It has been reported that we are growing our NIL by a large amount for this recruiting/portal class. Once Hill left and people were moved over from university fundraising to increase our fundraising

I’ve heard good things about fundraising for next year, however I’ve been burned too many times by this program and I’ll believe it when I see it. Supposedly people were holding donations until Hill was gone, and Gaber is getting a lot more dough out of the local area

I can’t defend or condemn his play calling with our OL and an inexperienced defensive lineman at center. He may end up being a lousy OC but I agree with Clayton, no play calling would look good with our personnel this year.

I don’t think any OC could have made this functioning offense given the injuries and talent holes but what concerned me was the lack of creativity and attempts to find something.

I can’t tell you how much I agree with this. They tell us things are going well every year. At some point, somebody is going to have to take an honest look at this thing, and really let people know what’s wrong, how they are trying to fix it, and what our money really looks like.

Our results have not spoken to things ā€œgoing wellā€ since Fall of 2019. And even then they weren’t going that well.

I’ll believe it when I see it also, but at least this time we have seen changes, Gaber removing Hill, which gives some evidence that status quo may not be acceptable anymore.

I feel like OC is a position destined for hate from the fans. I am not saying it’s not justified but I hear it all the time not just from our fans but fans of other teams, NFL fans etc. Everyone hates the OC.

I honestly don’t expect many changes to the staff. I do expect big changes to the roster though and that’s needed.

My complaint about Fitch is simple. Yes, the talent was what it was. Yes, they had a lot of injuries. No matter how bad you are to start, it’s just a starting point, and you can improve from there. You can try different plays, such as QB rollouts, or option plays. I saw a grand total of one true option play this year, and it went for a 10 yard gain against Tulane, but wasn’t called again. You can coach the players up. You need to find ways to improve a little here, a little there, but I didn’t see any improvement, with the exception of deciding to throw more to Sean Brown.

By contrast, the defense started out badly against App State, but did improve. The defense we saw in the last few games was much better than we saw at the start of the season.

Unless someone can explain to me how the offense improved as the season progressed, I’ll not be impressed with Fitch.

Remind me please, did Fitch and Albin have much history working together?

No, Fitch and Albin have never worked together. Albin apparently knew Fitch from coaching circles, and I don’t think Fitch was Albin’s first choice, but he was the best available at the time. Fitch may be a good recruiter, and maybe that’s his strength. I’m impressed with his recruit, White.

I appreciate this perspective. I candidly tuned out of our games far to often to really hold an opinion on this one. The talent gap was often evident from the opening kickoff.

I do think there’s value in installing the core of what you want to do even when you don’t have the talent to do that. We were going to be awful if we ran the option, the air raid, or the single wing with those guys out there. I can appreciate people not liking the lack of creativity. Upon reflection, Harrell was actually pretty solid when healthy.

There were four programs that rushed for less than 1,000 yards this season. Cal, Umass, New Mexico State and Charlotte. 3 of those teams are three of the worst teams in college football. Cal is the extremely weird exception. They had probably the best freshman quarterback in the country, and threw it all over the field, and had more sacks allowed than we did, and were a top 25 passing offense.

That said, not being able to run the football at all is a telltale sign of a lack of talent.
