Article: UNC System Disparities

Just wondering if anyone here had a subscription to the Charlotte Business Journal and might be willing to relay some of the finer points of this article (it should be very interesting to all): http://charlotte.bizjournals.com/charlotte/stories/2006/09/18/story4.html

A major efficiency study of the University of North Carolina System shows widespread disparities between how the 16 campuses collectively spend about $5.1 billion annually.
Campus officials and politicians across the state are studying the numbers, which provide an unprecedented look at UNC spending by directly comparing each campus…

clt read the article. in a nutshell, half of the unc system budget goes to unc-ch and unc-r.

unc-ch-1.68b
unc-r- 903m
unc-greenville- 522m
u of charlotte- 266m
unc-b- 255m

so once again, we continue to get it in the backside.

clt credits robert pittenger for looking into this.

who do we email about this?

Good Lord!!!

You have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!

Student population of UNC-Chapel Hill: 27,000 (26% more than Charlotte)
Funding at UNC-Chapel Hill: $1.68b (532% more than Charlotte)

21% should not equal 532%… Who does the math for the university system???

What the hell is going on with this state???
This is absolutely outrageous…

So much for the benefit of the UNC name eh Poole?

Ladies and Gentlemen: Good point of the young day delivered by none other than MKNiner.

clt could write for hours about this topic. charlotte and the univ of charlotte are constantly getting the shaft from the state.

can we move to south carolina? maybe the folks in columbia would appreciate us.

our elected folks in raleigh need to hear about this.

We should get together with other university members of this state on this one… It’s that serious of an issue.

In 1971 the General Assembly passed legislation which combined all the public educational institutions in North Carolina that grant baccalaureate degrees. This legislative action created the current 16-campus University of North Carolina. The reorganization called for a single entity-the Board of Governors-to present a comprehensive budget request on behalf of the consolidated University. The UNC Finance Division, as directed by the Board and the President, is responsible for creating the unified budget and administering the University’s financial affairs.

I plan on being on the phone quite a bit this afternoon:

$266 million, eh?

We are also 14th out of 16 (I think, we are in the bottom 3, whatever the actual number is) in per student funding among the UNC System schools.

Dubios has been fighting this since he came in.

I have heard that we have finally gotten to 16th; dead last in the past couple of years (per student funding)

UNC sucks

ditch the name

I’m sorry, but this is the post of the year. I’m so sick of North Carolina, especially considering how much of the state the Charlotte region subsidizes.

Oh yeah, here’s where I say complain to your democratically-elected state rep, but since it’s NC we’re talking about, complain to your gerrymandering-approved incumbant.

ridiculous, but you do have to remember that they have a medschool and many more docterate programs than we do. Med schools in particular cost a lot of money.

UNC-CH supporters want legislators to let the two campuses raise tuition on their own, without going through the UNC system's governing board. But UNC system leaders argue that the proposal would undermine the state's unified system of higher education.

Now, House Speaker Jim Black has made a suggestion that threatens even more fireworks: Why not also grant tuition-setting autonomy to East Carolina University, UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Greensboro?

UNC-Charlotte Chancellor Philip Dubois said that although he appreciated Black's recognition of the university's status as a research campus, he's concerned about tuition autonomy for any school.

“It’s not something we asked for,” Dubois said. “I think it is bad policy. I think it is not good for the UNC system. I don’t think it’s good for the university’s students and parents.”

Chapel Hill and NC State combine for $2.61 billion from the state, and the research campus in the state’s largest city receives $266 million.

What are the benefits of the UNC system again? I have forgotten.

Sure, but not $1.3 billion PER YEAR more…

ECU has a med school too, you know…

***Also, think about how much UNC-Chapel Hill gets in private $ from people & corporations. Guarantee=it dwarfs our entire budget many x’s over. So, do they really need the additional government dollars as much as us or other University of North Carolina universities??? hmmmm…

look at my previous post, if you dont like it get on the phone with these people

The benefits are 266 million. We’re getting the shaft, but if we weren’t part of the system, what money would we have then?
