Bahamas Bowl 2019

That is a really great article and lets you know that Healy’s impact goes beyond a bowl game. I am not on board with fans that think we need to double Healy’s compensation now, but I do agree that he is changing 49er sports.

Count me in the “double Healy’s contract, and multiply his buyout x5” camp

Buyout clauses do not keep coaches from leaving at our level, they just give you some compensation when they do. High performing G5 coaches want to move up (d’uh!), and if you attempt to make that impossible they will not stay with you. The only people you can strong arm at our level are coaches that are not going anywhere anyway.

Yes but they do give us lots of money

Let me put this another way. Healy has 4 years left on his contract. We know, he knows, everybody knows that if he keeps winning there will be a next job for him somewhere else. It will be a P5 program that pays big money. For now, Healy wants to be here. I can assure you that Healy wants to be the one to decide where he goes next and when. If you make it financially limiting for him to have choices, but tell him you will buy his servitude for another $750k per year he might take it–but he might decide that if it is just going to be about the money, then he might as well make it about the money. At that point why not tell us “no”, that he will not change his buyout. Do we fold our cards and give him a raise with the current buyout, or hold his feet to the fire? If he gets no raise from us, then we have pissed him off, and he is free–and now motivated–to have a good season and leave us next year. We get nothing from a deal like that, and when we try to hire his replacement it will be well known that we are not a good launching pad to bigger opportunities, which means the best candidates will go somewhere else.

I suggest we behave like we are a rising and great G5 job and give Healy challenges that intrigue him. Win the division, win the conference, create demand for a stadium expansion. We can keep giving him significant raises, and also for his staff. Maybe that keeps him a little longer.

He gets a bigger salary in exchange for a larger buyout. That’s how these things work. We are committing more to him and if he leaves we want to be compensated appropriately. Any school willing to pay him big money won’t have an issue with a larger buyout. I’d like to see a home and home required as well. Would be awesome to get a big sec team in.

Correct. The buyout is essentially the base pay x the number of years left on the deal. If you raise his base pay and/or extend the years…the buyout increases.

It’s not like negotiating one is independent of negotiating the other.

Everyone is raving about Drink’s buyout being $1.7mm like App St was a negotiating genius…but his base pay was S425k with 4 years left. That’s $1.7mm. Pretty sure that’s about what Healy’s would be for us too had he left this year.

Healy’s specifically was negotiated independently of his salary. His buyout at any point prior to the expiration of the deal is 1 year of base salary, so $450k, whether he left this year or at any point in the future. It also has a H-H component where the new school has to play us H-H starting at Charlotte within 6 seasons or buy out the series for $450k, negotiable. So his buyout is currently somewhere between $450k and $900k, as I’m assuming most schools would just pay us the ransom versus adjusting their schedules.

I’m not sure about the rankings, but as far as the raw defensive stats:

For the season we gave up 190.8 yards rushing, 198.3 yards passing, and 32.5 points per game.

Without Clemson, those numbers fall to 186.8 rushing, 195.4 passing, and 30.7 points per game. Not as big of a difference as I expected.

Without Clemson and Gardner Webb (FCS), those numbers are 189.6 rushing, 208.9 passing, and 31 points per game.

In the first half of the season (from Gardner Webb through the FIU loss), those numbers are 231.8 rushing, 180.2 passing, and 41 points per game.

In the second half of the season (from the WKU loss through ODU), those numbers are 149.8 rushing, 216.5 passing, and 24 points per game.

In all of our wins we averaged giving up 161.9 rushing, 170.7 passing, and 22.7 points per game.
In all of our losses we averaged giving up 231.4 rushing, 237 passing, and 46.2 points per game.

In our current 5-game win streak we give up 167.8 rushing, 201.6 passing, and 22.8 points per game.

Pretty dramatic turnaround on D.

The part that got cutoff said “second lowest total in FBS this year”.

Great information and it matches what I mentioned earlier in this thread about our improved defense the second half of the season.

You can go to Palm Florida. Search google for Bahamas cruise. There is a company called Paradise that just goes to and from the Bahamas. About 220 for 2 people. You arrive the morning of the 20th. Have to be back on the ship at 5 so will have to leave game early but can catch most. Can stay over 2 days but that may require a passport. Cruise only needs a certified copy of your birth certificate. Here is the link to their site. https://www.bahamasparadisecruise.com/deals.php?pdsrc=google_p_cl2&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-Pn9xfiv5gIVCZSzCh3jKwT_EAAYASAAEgL6ePD_BwE

Not in the bottom 10!

Bowl preview

I have a feeling with Healy getting his name out there so much, we will have lots of eyes on us. I love it.

Being on espn and the only game being played at that time is huge. It will be on bar screens nationwide. Winning would be a massive boost to our program overall and of course Will will become more of the media darling than he already is. Naturally recruiting will explode and next year we’ll be in a much higher profile bowl. I have a dream!

Healy has a lot riding on getting this W. He built a media storm fire and a win continues the gasoline on the fire for the sky rocket of money coming towards him while a loss slows it down a little.
