Good luck to even an undefeated G5 team getting that national semifinal spot. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Everyone is talking about football but the real effects of this are going to be in basketball. The G5 couldn’t compete anyway in football but now all the competitiveness that was in place in basketball is going to dry up as the P5 grab every quality recruit they want. No way to compete against it
The new College Football Playoff has the 10 FBS leagues contractually obligated for 12 years. That agreement guarantees a spot in one of the CFP’s six bowl games for the highest-ranked team from among the mid-major leagues – C-USA, the Sun Belt, MAC, Mountain West and American Athletic. That includes consideration for one of the national semifinal games.
You know that the 6 bowl games are not all part of the playoffs right? Only four teams get in the playoffs not all 12 that get in these bowls. Only two of them are playoff bowls. The only thing the G5 is guaranteed is a spot in one of the 6 bowls. This does not mean they get a spot in the playoffs. And I can Guaranteeyou that it will take an act of god for a G5 team to get one of the four play off spots. They will find any and every reason to keep that from happening.
Gassman, you are correct and your point is well taken. With the new system, if an undefeated G5 team wins its CFP bowl game and does not get selected for the 4 team playoff, its plight is magnified and even more apparent than under the old system. Now, explain your reasoning on basketball. How is it that much different than the recent past, except that P5 conferences are now larger and more heavily weighted toward your position?
My take on basketball is that currently enough good recruits filter down to G5 schools to keep things mildly competitive. For example many G5 schools will pull off “upsets” vs P5 schools throughout the season. In this new reality with P5 schools offering a better financial package players are going to do everything they can to try and get a slot with those schools. They will likely hold out on committing to G5 schools for the opportunity of a last minute slot at a P5 due to the financial inducements and what ever benefits they come up with. For example would Keyshawn Woods have committed to us so early in this environment or would he have held out for a chance at a P5 slot.
All that being said the general balance will be the same; the P5 get the best players. But my gut tells me that there will just be a certain percentage of talent that will not find it’s way to the G5 because of these new rules and it’s going to make a difference in competitiveness.
That’s just my uninformed opinion. I could be way off.
To expand this discussion a bit.
Does anyone know where the big east stands on this? They like to fancy themselves on par with the P5 in the basketball arena. Are they going to join in with these new benefits so they can compete with the P5 for recruits or are they going to be left behind like the rest of D1?
