Baseball rewrites the record book

Baseball has massacred UMass this weekend by scores of 18-3 and 24-6. I got a text from Ryan Rose tonight that told me about all the records we’ve either broken or tied this weekend. I’ll let Charlotte49ers.com take it from there:
Rob Lyerly broke one school record and tied three others with six hits, including three home runs as the Charlotte 49ers baseball team set the school record with 29 hits and blasted Massachusetts to win their fourth Atlantic 10 series of the season, 24-6 at Earl Lorden Field Saturday afternoon. Charlotte is now 29-8 on the season. With a Duquesne loss on Saturday, Charlotte is now alone atop the Atlantic 10 standings at 11-3.

Lyerly finished the day 6-for-6, with three home runs, a triple and a pair of doubles, knocking home six runs in the contest. His six hits ties Field Culbreth for most in a game, while his three homers ties Alex Saylors and James Matan (who did it twice) for most home runs in a contest. His 19 total bases bests Matan’s 13 from 1997 in a game against Yale. Lyerly finished with hits in his last two at-bats on Friday, giving him eight consecutive base hits, tying Bo Robinson’s mark from 1997.

Charlotte has scored a school-record 42 runs in two games so far at UMass, with 51 hits in two games. If the Niners push across six or more runs Sunday, they will set the record for runs in the three game series.
I guess the UMass coaches never considered not pitching to Lyerly? :49ers:

It was Travis Ford on the mound, putting the screws to UMass one last time before he peaced out for Stillwater.

good job baseball!!!

 Nice! Just warming up for Tuesday.

Rob Lyerly (from my alma mater, Piedmont HS—Unionville, NC) doing well! For those that don’t know, Piedmont is also where Matt Foard went and several other previous Niner baseball players). We have always had a very strong baseball program.

FYI: Rob’s younger brother, Jim is playing for Piedmont right now and they are having another solid year and should have a good seeding in the State playoffs.

The Niners have massacred the Minutemen.

I love it. Way to go ball team!

any record set in A10 play, should have an *

sorry but its true, I know some kool aid crowd will get upset by that, but the rest of the A10 talent wise is no better than Legion ball in Charlotte

the offensive records Bo Robinson and James Matan set in 1998 were vs CUSA (1/2 the league was top 25…Houston, ECU, USM, USF, Rice, Tulane, UL) Hell UH had 2 first round draft picks

That’s a somewhat harsh and at the very least bold statement Metro. Is the A-10 that bad? I realize the cold climate schools have trouble recruiting but I didn’t know they were comparable to Legion talent.

How do you massacre UMass twice, & then lose Game 3?

The A10 is definitely that bad. The American Legion team that I played for in high school could probably go over .500 in the A10.

I don’t think its harsh. Its accurate. When it comes to collegiate sports other than basketball, we were pretty middle-of-the-pack in the CUSA. Its no coincidence that suddently, after moving to the A10, that we happen to finish atop the league in just about every single sport. The A10 is a horribly uncompetitive league…

Look for the Charlotte 49ers to win the Atlantic 10 championship this spring. In which sport? According to the conference’s coaches, you could pick just about any one of them. In the preseason rankings released by the A-10, five of the seven teams Charlotte fields have been projected to win their conference championship.

I just want to set the record straight after a couple emails and pm’s:

What Lyerly did was incredible.
I don’t think I have seen anyone in my life get 19 total bases in any level.

He should easily win Natl Player of the Week. (start the pub war SID)

I just reacted after the mention of Matan and Robinson being mentioned. I stand firm that career or season records set during the 90s are more impressive because the Metro and CUSA had legit southern teams with many draft picks and future MLBers. Every Metro or CUSA team had multiple draft picks, same can NOT be said in the A10, it just can’t. USF, Charlotte, Va Tech, USM, Tulane, and Houston must of produced 20 MLB players or more from the 90’s and early 2000’s (and I am excluding the dozens of minor leaguers drafted).

I don’t disagree Metro, but you’re talking about conference play (roughly 1/2 of the season). We play very similar non-con baseball schedules now vs. CUSA days though (the other ~1/2 of the schedule) and you might could argue even better nc schedules now than in CUSA days. So, overall I agree the schedule was tougher back then, but I don’t think AS MUCH tougher as you feel it was. IMO.

Guys, Metro is dead right about this. Last year’s team and this year’s team are fun to watch. But the A-10 is just a pathetic baseball league. It is terrible. I would be surprised if any A-10 team could win the Div II SAC-8 league that Catawba and Carson-Newman are in.

That '98 team (in my opinion) is the best that has ever laced it up for the Niners. I could be wrong. I didn’t start watching Niner baseball until my freshman year in '95. But James and Bo were disgusting! Absolutely disgusting! They both were right at having 100 RBI for the season. No one else has even come close to that. And as Metro stated, that was against future MLB hurlers, not A-10 pitchers that can barely throw strikes.

uh, you do know we’re in the A10, right! Are we pathetic?

Some of your points are valid, but you lost all credibility with me due to the SAC-8 comment! Puhhhleeeease!..Dang, we couldn’t win the SAC-8, huh?

WE could. I don’t know about 10 of the other teams in the league, though. I think that was a totally legitimate comment, and I don’t think N1ner was including us in that.

Charlote : A-10 Baseball :: Memphis : C-USA Basketball

Time out. I never said the OOC was more/less difficult. I am saying when you begin A10 play, you can begin padding your stats now, or the difficulty does not increase like it used to.

I would be curious how many baseball games you evaluated from 1992-2005 (metro and cusa) to make the comparison?

what you are also not taking into acct, is that 10 years ago, 49er baseball did not start the year with 25 home games (slight exaggeration, but not really). Home games help.

In fact, most 49er sports including baseball, tend to get BETTER stats once conference play begins. I don’t understand your point, since the weekend mentioned in post #1 was A10 play anyways.

bottom line:
what is happening NOW is awesome for the program and thats what matters, not individual performances. As long as we continue to throttle the A10, I will tip my hat. But it does sort of suck for players who set records against far stiffer competition in the past, watch them fall vs. some of these A10 opponents. John Maine won 12 games his JR year in CUSA, he would of won 18 in the A10, but Mills owns the season record for wins now.

That said, Lyerly broke a record vs a shiity team, and Matan’s previous record was against a shiity team (Yale), so lets move on. I have no idea who Bo Rob got his 8 consecutive hits off for the record. I know Bo had about 20 straight hits off me in a fall. :weep:

Now…
I hope Lyerly, Mc, Bray, and CT have 19 total bases a piece tomorrow!!:49ers:

Allow me to ask the question Metro wants us to ask .

Metro, how many games do you think you would have won if you had pitched in this league?

(sorry, but I had to ask)

is the baseball game sold out?
