Baseball Stadium OFFICIAL Announcement (Robert & Mariam Hayes Stadium)

i am not debating we are a basketball school. That sport has put us on the map and brings in great revenue. HOWEVER that does not mean as fans we should not celebrate when another sports do well or in this case create a wonderful addition to the program like the baseball stadium will provide.
some of you guys are unreal. Do you grasp that getting a football team boils down to much more than $$$$! I do not understand what you are saying when u say “if we could raise 5 million for baseball we can do it for football.” lets not get specific but getting a football team relies more than just money coming in.

this is a great stride for the athletic program at Charlotte, no matter what some of you say. Start embracing these other sports like soccer, softball and baseball because they will be winning at a higher level sooner than the sport played on the hardcourt.

womens soccer, softball and baseball will all make it to the NCAA regionals next season. With a good chance to advance even further. BUT the majority of you will still be pouting about football.

no wonder why people say our fan base SUCKS!! some of you on this board give niner fans a bad name.
I never said that the funding for the stadium equals that of football. All I am saying is that IF we find it necessary to to build a nicer stadium for a sport that relatively few care about then I think it is not out of the question that the school should actively back a football program birth.

I have no doubt that the sports you list will be very good and competitive, however that will not change the fact that I hate baseball, softball and soccer for the most part. I wish them well but you will not find me at one of those events just for the “support the team” thing. If I don’'t enjoy it then I won’t go watch it.
The other thing is that all those sports combined can not and will not have the impact that a football program can have on the rest of the student body.

I am happy for the AD and the baseball team, I would just like us to put a similar effort behind a sport that is much more universally celebrated and enjoyed.

your complaints are silly…
do you own a house? an analogy of what you are saying is: you really want a $50,000 pool with a waterfall in your backyard, but you need to spend $1000 to repair your existing fence now. Do you let the fence rot another decade until you have the ability to install that pool? Of course not. You spend a grand on the fence now, and in the long run that grand won’t effect your pool. To get that pool, you better hit a lottery, inherit some cash, get a big raise.

To have football anytime soon, our school has to hit the lottery (alum become the next Mark Cuban or Bob Johnson), inherit some big cash, or raise our giving and committments gradually. Its coming the next 10 years, but this baseball stadium is irrelevant to football.

After this, all sports except softball will have first class facilities. (Golf practice facility is being finished at Rocky River GC). Next up is to complete full-funding of all sports.

Then, when the leaders feel good about the ACADEMIC side, the attention will shift to football.

Agreed, but when do you think they’ll feel good about academics? My guess is as soon as they reach “doctoral research-extensive status.” IMO, this academic goal should only be a few years away.

They’ll feel good about academics when the research dollars start to come in, which is going to take longer than a few years.

Metro’s analagy is dead-on. You could have taken this $5.9 million and thrown it into a football fund, but we’d still be light years away from making it happen. So instead you put it into a facility that will now put us on par or closer to par with some of the other big boys in the state.

Whoever keeps saying that people don’t care about baseball just don’t get it. People do like baseball, in theory, but our stadium wasn’t very nice and provided you no amenities to go to the game. People in Seattle love basketball and the Sonics, yet the team is thinking about moving for one reason: facility.

You can make money on college baseball, there are schools that are doing it. It is not a 100-person operation like a football game would be, where you have to recoup all the costs of security, etc. You can run a baseball game on far less money, and if we can get a couple hundred paying customers through the door, that equates to making some money, plus add in a couple hundred students, the atmosphere will improve and hopefully people will want to come back.

Not to mention that this new facility puts us in line to host the conference tournament in short order, as well as numerous other outside events including possibly state championship games (hello, recruits and their parents coming on campus “unofficially”).

Think back to when Tulane was not a College World Series or at-large berth team year in and year out. We were rivals with them. They invested the money to really take their team to the next level, we did not, and now we are trying to get back up to that level. (PS, do more people know them for football or baseball?)

The only part that concerns me is the “aggressive completion date” of February. Roughly translated, that means ‘it’s not going to be ready by February unless all the stars align, so be prepared for construction equipment at the first half of the season’s home games.’ Small price to pay.

Softball’s facility is getting new bleachers/stands that will be permanent. Aside from that, the playing surface is nice and what more do you really need? I saw the softball seating thing on that facilities web site a while back, when everyone was first posting about this baseball re-do, but haven’t heard anything about it since. Aside from that, I’m not sure what else you could do over there to really make it “nice.”
Its coming the next 10 years, but this baseball stadium is irrelevant to football.
You miss my point here. I agree that the baseball stadium has little to do with football. I am simply saying that the fact that we are building this nice facility and finding donors to support college baseball then drawing support for a football team will not be as difficult as the AD leads us to believe. I am just saying that when this university tries to do something it can happen, even if it its years away.

I don’t think you can compare apples to oranges like that. This stadium has been in the planning stages for literally nearly 10 years, but there was never the funding for it. They really had to reach back and convince Mariam Hayes to do this. The investment for football is going to be significant, and that is going to require a lot more corporate support than one individual donor.

I think if the University put its mind to football, they could accomplish it. But I don’t agree that this is the right time to do it. We are on the verge of fully funding all of our sports and becoming a power in the Atlantic 10 across the board. If we can go into this league and completely dominate, we will start to draw attention from other places, and football may come out of that.

jesus we get a KICK ASS new baseball stadium and all we can do is whine about not having football!?

wow. this new stadium is going to be SUH-WEET, and i cant wait to see the niners knockin the long ball outta that place

I know that I will definately be going at least 10 games next year even though I only went to one game this year.

I think that’s the concept everyone needs to keep in mind. It says a lot. We need to keep in mind that we will need a conference in which to play football, and one that will NOT require our basketball program to take a step backward. I also think the football efforts being made by Jimmyhat and some others on this board are definitely steps in the right direction.

As for the new baseball stadium… I CAN’T WAIT! This is GREAT news.

Of course the Observer missed something else that could’ve given the 49ers some credit…

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/colleges/14830863.htm

Jason Hill, who now coaches the On Deck O’s, said he is hearing back from the Tar Heel players that it was all worth it.

Hope I’m not the only one here who remembers Jason Hill.

The sad thing is that all 3 Hill brothers, Jason (who also was an assistant here for a couple of years), Kevin, and Travis all played at Charlotte under Hibbs.

I know for a fact that they have contacted Hibbs about certain players and Hibbs won’t give them the time of day. And then these certain players end up signing with Carolina or South Carolina or Georgia or Winthrop.

A ton of talent comes out of On Deck and with 3 former Niner players running it, we should be able to hand pick who we want from there. Unfortunately, that is not the case. This has been a huge area of frustration that I have had with Hibbs.

I am always talking with Kevin to see if there are any players that we can get to Charlotte out of the On Deck program. He wants to send them to Charlotte! Instead, Hibbs recruits the hell out of Maryland for some reason.

There is complete logic to Hibbs recruiting:
When he first got here in 93’, he worked the area hard. But he got burned by local coaches and players and their parents. He would work his ass off to convince locals to play here, and instead they accepted ACC or SEC offers (and ended up riding the bench at those schools). Put yourself in his shoes: you are fresh from Wichita St, and kids are telling you they would rather go to the ACC and ride the pine instead of play everyday for you. Plus alot of local selfish high school coaches with big egos want their kids to go to the ACC school, to make themselves look better (I won’t name names).
Conversely, Hibbs can go up to Maryland and Va because kids, coaches, and parents take the Niners at face value (more respect) and are excited to have a top 100 baseball program speak to them or offer a scholarship.
The pendulum is getting ready to swing though, you will see alot of locals DYING to play at this new facility. We actually will have leverage, key to any negotiation.

That’s because Maryland is the shit.

Ok, so who exactly are Robert & Mariam Hayes? Besides obviously wealthy people? Do they have some sort of connection to the baseball program?

In the story I believe it says that Robert is her late husband, and that Barnhardt was her brother in law (as in, Barnhardt Student Activity Center).
I guess the 5 people at the games will really enjoy it.
nice…

Whoever asked about Mariam Hayes, this came up in a Google search:
