Benkovic may redshirt

RT @davidscott14: Heard tonight that @Charlotte49ers’ Ivan Benkovic (ruptured disc in his back), might redshirt. Not expected back until first of year.

IF Cherry can get on track and be an outside threat, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We’d have PH, Lester, Twill, Ingram and Cherry as guards.

Best of luck to Benny!

Wow. Ruptured disc. I was wondering what was taking so long. Usually back issues don’t take 3-4 weeks to resolve unless its something…well, like a ruptured disc.

I’m not so optimistic. He is our only proven shooter, until Cherry hits one (I’m sure he will get it going at some point). But, I thought Benny was going to help our perimeter shooting be much improved this year.

If he can come back by the 1st of the year he will be able to play the entire conference season. If he can play effectively at that time, no way would I redshirt him. But, if he is hurting I hope he does not rush back…either way I hope he gets better soon.

Remember, Benny struggled mightily at start of last season and then it just clicked. Hopefully it clicks soon for Cherry, we need that added dimension to our offense.

Hopefully but Cherry is the old man on the team. Not a freshman playing college ball for the first time.

I do remember. I think Benk started 0-7 from the 3 last season before getting going. Cherry has proven he can shoot at this level, just waiting for it to happen. I’d rather have both, though. I think Benk can help this year.

Be prepared for Benny to never be the same again. It’s a serious injury. I’m hopeful for the best but ruptured discs suuuuuck.

One thing he has going for him is that its not like he is going to lose his blazing speed.

clt says dat’s racist.

I saw him shoot once or twice during warmups for ETSU. I guess it’s worse than it appears.

This sounds like a very serious injury. While this is going to sound cold, (and to an extent it is) why don’t we give him a scholarship for school and pull his basketball scholarship? Make the terms identical to what the basketball one was, only just for academics. We promised him an education and we should make sure he can get it, but if the kid can’t play up to the level we need him to, I would rather get a jump start on recruiting. We need another SF/PF and we could still get one for 2014 if we moved now. And lets be clear here, I am not saying just pull it now, but if over the course of a few more weeks it becomes known that Benny will not be the same then we should swap the schollies.

B4 everyone throws a virtual chair at me, Larry Brown did this at SMU and the kids he did it to were not even injured. He was still able to recruit.

Yes, Larry Brown and Alan Major are analogous.

English Major?

Why don’t we just give the kid a chance to heal? I mean, no one said his career is over. They haven’t even said he won’t play this year. Besides that, I’m not sure you can just force the university to give him an academic scholarship to get him off a basketball one. That would be taking an academic schollie from someone else who might be more deserving.

I can’t tell if you were looking for a real answer to this ā€˜hypothetical’, but that would be mine.

By no means is his career over. I’m just saying be prepared for the worst because back injuries are often a proverbial can of worms.

I hope he bounces back, I really like Benny and what his shooting can do for us.

I think we’re fortunate that he isn’t someone that relies on superior athleticism for his game. Just have to hope it doesn’t affect his shot.

I hate it for Benkovic because he really is awesome and a great piece of this team. I hope he comes back better than ever. I’d hate to lose him for this season, but if Cherry can get his game going and Ingram is back at PR, we should be able to survive his injury.

That could be the problem. You use both your back and your legs quite a bit when you shoot. The back has to support the shooting motion of the arms. Everything works together.

Curious, without relevance to the subject at hand. If a player sits out a year can he transfer without having to lose a year at his new school?

No, because you have to spend a year in residence at your new school before playing. It’s not the sitting out part as much as the in residence part.

If he has to sit this year it will be unfortunate for him because of the influx of guard talent we will have next season. With the lack of depth he could have played some quality minutes. Next season I’m not sure how many minutes he will get unless he can play well at SF. He is 6-6 but can he guard other SF’s.

with how unproven we are from three, he will get minutes next season because there are always minutes for players his size who can shoot 40 percent from three. he is probably never going to be a starter but i think next season he will get 15-20 minutes per game.
