Best Albums of 2009 ... Running Thread
That’s pretty good, thanks for posting. Is that the guy from Of Montreal? Sounds really similar, but I like that song better than any of the Of Montreal songs I’ve heard.
no of Montreal lead guy is Kevin Barnes from Athens, GA

Phoenix is a french band. Lead singer is Thomas Mars. They make pretty solid poppy indie rock.

Glad someone else likes it.

Kevin Barnes/Of Montreal is kinda hit and miss for me. I loved Wraith Pinned to the Mist (& Other Games), until they licensed it to become the Outback Steakhouse song (“Let’s go Outback tonight…”)

Phoenix have been hanging around for a while. They had a track on the Lost in Translation soundtrack, that I admit wasn’t my favorite (and doesn’t hold up to any of the genius of Kevin Shields on that album - especially City Girl). I also remember somewhat liking Long Distance Call and a couple of other tracks from their last album. But the hype around the new one is that it is much, much better:

I haven’t heard it yet, but it’s out there. I’m half tempted to go looking for it and Doves - Kingdom of Rust.

I would have put money on it being the same person, the vocals are eerily similar.

Here are a couple I just got. Haven’t given them a thorough listen yet, but both sound pretty good from what I’ve heard.

Dan Auerbach (from The Black Keys)
Keep it hid

Radio Moscow
Brain Cycles
(thie first album [self titled] was great)

Im looking forward to Asher Roth’s Asleep in the Bread Aisle, which is dropping on 4/21.

Highly recommend having a listen to his stuff via youtube.

“I Love College”- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43pkqeamXe8&feature=related
"Roth Boys"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_2cK6eb11I&feature=related
"Lark on My Go-Kart"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_1YVFX-Oro

I’m looking forward to forgetting Asher Roth ever happened.

This is pretty good, but not nearly as good as the last Black Keys album.

Common: Universal Mind Control

Common: Universal Mind Control

I dunno, I was kind of disappointed with that one. Common just isn’t as good as he used to be.

The Devil Wears Prada - With Roots Above and Branches Below

the two new songs i’ve heard have been excellent. “Des Moines” and “Assistant to the Regional Manager” are much different sounding than old TDWP…if you’re expecting the brutality of “HTML” or “Dont Dink and Drance” you’re not gonna get it. its more structured, they kinda have choruses, etc. but it sounds kinda darker in a way, and there are still nice breakdowns and some good low range screams. this album isnt going to be as good as Plagues but its still gonna be good. i really want this record to get leaked soon.

Just got the new Queensryche: American Soldier.

Not too bad, I don’t think it’s as good as Mindcrime II but I need to listen to it a few more times. I read the lyrics to Home Again and found them quite moving. I think the addition of having the lead singer’s daughter sing on the track brings the track home, no pun intended.

It amazes me how Queensryche is able to continue to put together these concept albums where all the songs fit together, especially in today’s world of digital downloads where individual songs sell better than whole albums.

So far my favorites are still the new Animal Collective and the new Neko Case album.

Animal Collective is growing on me. I love Neko, but I’ve never loved her more country roots. Liked her better in New Pornographers. Guess I’m just a pop kid.

I’ll still get middle cyclone, at some point.

Okay, I’m won over. This is absolutely brilliant:

My Girls (HD)

There isn’t much that I feel I need
A solid soul and the blood I bleed
With a little girl, and by my spouse
I only want a proper house

I don’t care for fancy things
Or to take part in the vicious race
But to provide, for one who asks,
I will, with heart, on my father’s grave

I don’t mean
To seem like I care about material things
Like our social status
I just want
Four walls and adobe slats
For my girls

Would transcendent be too cliche? The video is perfect.

I gave my wife a copy of this album and about 2 weeks later she didn’t know any of the songs past the 4th track. She kept listening to “My Girls” and “Summertime Clothes” on repeat.

Cool video by the way.

The new Camera Obscura album is very good as well.

Were those supposed to be good lyrics?

Asher Roth Asleep in the Bread Aisle. Surprisingly good. didn’t have high expectations for this. He has great flow. A lot of legit people backing him up…Busta, Ludacris, Don Cannon. definitely worth a listen.

If you have no clue who Asher is, he did the original version of “I Love Charlotte” called “I Love College”
Were those supposed to be good lyrics?
I doubt anyone understands what they’re singing. The lyrics are not what you’d expect.

And yes, it’s compelling that Panda Bear is singing about his family in this ass-moving song.
