The shitty thing is that coaches donāt really get that opportunity anymore.
Iād rather have Purdie and Omega Blake.
Not sure Iām interested in FCS transfers. But if it gets you stoked, more power to you. Doubt it will make me wanna renew my season tickets. Feels like settling.
If he, Gonzales transfers to us lets hope its a battle between him and Ivey for back up or 3rd string.
Sources?
Both kids are going P4. Biff was the only way to keep Purdie according to his dad. Blake was probably going back P4 regardless.
Typically when we get a first time post like that, itās either very right, or very wrong.
If it is done already, that was an incredibly fast process. Biff was let go on Monday. That post was Sunday.
I have no reason not to believe the guy, and I really like Kerwin Bell. I just want to win.
By the old system Kerwin Bell is who I would want. The way things are now you have to consider that he basically has little experience with the portal and NIL. Brewster would most likely be our best candidate for bringing in talent. Last guy brought in talent so thats not the whole equation. Really Iām not sure what we need. Probably a Brewster type
This will decide Purdueās destination. Plain and simple.
If we can find the money somehow, and make a hire he doesnāt think will ruin his development, we have a chance (a chance, not a lock) as he is already the guy here. If we cannot replace and in fact build upon the NIL pool walking out with Biff, forget keeping Purdie, or anyone else.
I hope Mike has a plan. Better yet, I hope he had one well before he made this call.
I didnāt like having our NIL tied so closely to our coach, but again, that masked a weakness in our fundraising.
NIL and paying players will be coming in house in the near future, so I donāt think that part is as important as it is right now. I also think we will see some federal legislation on the issue.
Given that, we need a football coach first and foremost and one that knows how to win with limited resources is even better. He does need to understand roster management and the portal though.
clt could see purdie and blake marketing themselves as a NIL combo pack, QB and WR
I think Lca49 is an App Fan. Not sure he can be trusted. However, I do think a coach will be named soon. Will it be Kerwin Bell? I do not know.
Please no on kerwin bell. Would be unbelievably underwhelming
I really like Brew as a person, and if we were CUSA Iād maybe even like him as a head coach. But his record by itself is not one we should hire. He had a terrible tenure at Minnesota, during a completely different era in college football. Since then heās bounced around as a TE coach. Again great guy, great positivity, but the poor HCing record and lack of coordinator experiences are big strikes.
Bell in my mind would be a great hire. WCU is extremely resource limited and has not been consistently good in a while. Heās made them competitive in a tough situation. Couple that with his teams always having great offenses and I think he could be a great guy to not only turn our program around but jumpstart fan interest. Itās a lot easier to get a great offense in the AAC than try to play Big 10 ball. Concerns about recruiting/NIL might be valid, but we just fired a guy who was supposed to be a great recruiter and give us the top NIL in the league. You still gotta be able to coach.
Another interesting tidbit is a couple years after his departure from JU as a HC the program shut down due to financial reasoning. Heās never really been anywhere thatās been financially ācompetitiveā in the league theyāre in.
From a macro perspective this guy has a lot of experience head coaching successful teams at programs who are at a resource disadvantage. His programs have an identity (explosive offense). A lot of boxes Hill talked about, he checks.
The only strikes against him IMO are his age and his failure at USF as an OC. Although even the OC stuff, he was well liked by USF fans so I imagine there is a bit more to it.
I canāt imagine what anyone would be expecting us to be able to hire if they donāt like Kerwin Bell and his rĆ©sumĆ©
There are plenty of gettable options but he is barely over 500 at the fcs level
Some think weāre a lot higher up on the totem pole than we actually are.
WCU as a program has a 40% win rate. Over .500 there is extremely impressive IMO.
I also think other good candidates exist, I however like Bell the more I dig into his resume.
Agreed. Letās hire a D3 coach with a .250 winning percentage.
I sort of agree. Im just saying, on its surface a 59 year old coach with that record is concerning
