This is the first time a head coach at Charlotte has been fired without a lengthy āFire____ā thread on NNN. I think many of the critics were keeping their powder dry until next season.
I wouldnāt say it doesnāt mean anything
I think that Biff gave up. Nothing was working that he was doing and it showed in his emotions. Healy gave up recruiting and Biff gave up coaching. Just my opinion but there was a marked change in him this year vs. last. Could have been the admin tamping him down. I do believe that the chancellor was not a huge fan of his.
My picks in preferred order fwiw.
Bill Clark
Chad Morris
Charlie Strong
Skip Holtz
I told my wife earlier this year that it would be a mistake to fire Poggi. Still feel that way as it is embarrassing that neither football team in this city will let a coach build anything. But I did say that if they did then it would be all better if Wilks was the hire.
While we are playing pipe dream - letās go full bore pipe dream (however - I would put this pipe dream at a greater than 0% chance of being possible)
Head Coach: Steve Wilks
OC: Greg Olsen
DC: Luke Kuechly
RBS: Jonathan Stewart
NOT a total pipe dream for the following reasons:
Wilks lives here, loves to coach, has been out of the NFL long enough now that he may be content, has connections with the team
Olsen: Also connections with the team (but not in the most favorable light I admit). WANTS to be a head coach in the NFL.
Luuuuke: Just loves football and loves Wilks.
Moooose: WR Coach (connection with his kid on track!)
Steeeew: Not as solid since Olsen and Kuechly had to pretty much beg him to join their staff at whatever middle school they are coaching at.
I still say it is possible just because they all love to coach and Hill has done it before with the failed Mark Price experience. Of course most would love the move, many would say it is a gimmic ā but it would be hella fun.
None of those guys has any experience recruiting. That would be the downfall.
Trueā¦ but the names themselves would be a start.
I equate this to the Andy Griffith Show where Aunt Bea was trying to save money on a refrigerator and Andy kept telling her to just āpay the manā to get one the worked. So to Mike Hill, I say, Mike just pay the man whatever it takes to get a great coach.
I think that we may be a more desirable option than many may think. If there is someone out there that has HC experience that has any sort of success knows that they are coming into a program that the current bar is subterranean. So just having consistent success will make the masses happy for a couple years. The struggles of NIL and portal are a common factor amongst most G5 schools, so that shouldnāt deter any suitors. We can still play off of the facts that:
- In a large metropolitan area
- Absolute beautiful campus
- Expansion is already planned
- A fan base that is willing to stick it out
- Spectacular student support
- Multiple sell outs with no evidence of a successful season
I would imagine that any coach would see this as a situation where they could make this their program and that the only real direction for us (even just showing up for a game) is upward.
I liked Biff, but I like winning MUCH, MUCH more.
I will hold my comments about who got screwed and what did or didnāt happen until more is presented from both sides.
I will also hold my comments regarding who we will or will not be able to attract until I see who is the replacement and what their staff will look like. That includes the gloom and doom that we are already screwed before we even know what or whom will be screwing us.
Anyone know if the press conf will be available live?
I concur. My son worked on the support staff under Healy and Poggi. The sentiment from the support staff is that they are glad heās gone. Very toxic environment from what Iāve been told.
Thatās right. She wouldnāt ācall the manā because it was too expensive. Thanks
āCall the manā Mike!
This is great news. The only thing worse than making a mistake is not acknowledging you made a mistake in the first placeā¦ Hill tried to hit a 5 run Home Run with Biff, predictably- we took a called strike 3 right down the middle.
What do we need?
- Tangible, recent head coaching experience
- WINNER at the sort where the tangible, recent head coaching experience occurred.
- A builders mentality
- Experience recruiting in the southeast
- Experience building a quality staff
I hope Hill has done an honest self evaluation and has admitted he needs lots of help with this hireā¦ Heās 0-for his big hires so farā¦ Heās unprepared to handle this alone Iām afraid to say.
Haha couldnāt have said it better myself.
Anyone saying Poggi wanted to leave and this was an amicable breakup can stop with that nonsense now. This is spitting in the eye of Mike Hill.
Be prepared for no search firm involvement, lol.
clt hopes we begin an international search, not just national
FYI, Hill didnāt hire Mark Price.
