Bobby Lutz Interview

We don’t have anything else to talk about on this board. We are in 10th place in CUSA in basketball and football season is months away.

Always appreciated that Lutz seemed like a good guy, he ran a clean program, and he was passionate about the school.

But his firing was clearly justified at the time. I think many of you are viewing that 19 win season in some kind of hazy nostalgia-filled vacuum. Recruiting had fallen off a cliff, Lutz had yet to show he could consistently recruit in the A10 and had an over-reliance on jucos that only kept the program unstable from year to year, the team collapsed by the end of the year (lost 7 of the last 8 games) with obvious team chemistry problems and playing terrible defense, and the season just before had finished 11-20. Pointing to 19 wins ignores everything else around it.

It’s obvious now that Major was a terrible hire, it’s too soon to know for sure if Price was a bad hire (he better show he can recruit a balanced team pretty soon though), but neither of these things changes the fact that it was time for a change when Lutz was let go. Actually, in hindsight, the smarter move would’ve been to let him leave for S. Alabama when he had that offer, the program could’ve hired someone new sooner, and Charlotte could’ve avoided owing Lutz so much money after he was fired and might have convinced the administration they could hire someone with more experience after Lutz.

My passion for Niner basketball was off the charts during the Bobby Lutz era. I think most Niner fans associate Bobbys tenure in CUSA 1.0 as a success and we miss being relevant in the basketball world. Nostalgia drives this thread. I want that feeling back. I want coach Price to succeed. If we need to add an assistant coach that can recruit quality bigs, please do it. I want that Niner passion to return!
Won’t that mean having to dip into the WBB recruiting budget?

Lutz was able to move up to the big chair when we were a winning team and he was already on the staff so he knew the players and recruits. We wanted someone that could keep it going and for a long time he did, but what we learned is that a head coach that does not sell the program is really an assistant coach. There is a part of me that would love to see Lutz come back and take us to the NCAAs again–who doesn’t love a good comeback story–but I would be just as happy with Price doing it. I am afraid if Lutz were hired back his first two calls would be to Moxley and Kummer and I have no confidence in that staff. That said, I wish Lutz nothing but the best.

He was too loyal to former players and friends and it ultimately cost him.

Bobby Lutz was the best overall coach Charlotte ever had! I think Mark Price can be good if he can recruit some good big players. I am not sure if the current assistant coaches are up to the recruiting task. Charlotte is going to continue to struggle unless they can recruit some 4 and 5 position players who can be starters.

You know, Rob Moxley recruited a lot of the players that helped Gottfried get to the Sweet-Sixteen twice.

clt says this is the state of our bball team. A game against our logistic rival in conference and we are chatting up a former coach.

Lutz 4 life

Play beans

Nah, not totally correct. First year of Gott was s16 with basically all Sidney Lowe recruits. Besides, Mox is in some poor health, one reason why he and Lutz were not there this year.

Lutz is a good guy. Miss him. But, old news. He was good in CUSA, and not so much in A10. Should have gotten booted, that doesn’t mean our AD is good at picking a replacment.

I have never understood why people on this board act like we fired John wooden seven years ago.

Lutz inherited a NCAA team (which should have beaten a #1 seed). He got to recruit in a strong conference and sold recruits on playing nationally recognized schools. In comparison, Coach Price inherited 4 players (not all of which are viable D1 players) in an atrocious conference.

We currently have a bad team and will continue to be until a strong post player(s) is/are added.

I understand how some will want to remember better times however lutz wasn’t a great coach and should have been removed earlier. Time and our recent years of ineptness make people forget the 8 pt first half we scored at home vs miss st, lutz’s insistance of shooting 3s despite whether we had capable shooters or not, his switching defenses which almost always resulted in uncontested layups, losing to horrible teams every year we should have run out of the gym, his pornstache, his temper tantrums, etc. And people here think he could recruit in this conference and win now? Not a chance.

I was glad Bobby took the high road in the interview.

Thats a big “Hell Yeah” to the cheerleader pics !

He definitely wants the NC State job describing the kind of coach they would need and then saying how he is that type of coach.

He did take the high road though you could tell in the interview it still really bothers him he was fired from Charlotte talking about the last season finishing with 19 wins and how much he loved the school. I loved his passion here and I am grateful for all he did here. If you go back and read some of his post-game comments during the 2005 year he knew things were going to be tough in the A-10 and how much we had benefited recruiting wise being in a CUSA with Cincinnati, Memphis, and Louisville. I still agree with our decision to move on from him (don’t agree with hiring Major obviously) but can appreciate the good things he did here.
I hope Bobby gets another shot as a head coach somewhere.
I heard he turned down the Appalachian State job. No. I can’t explain why he would do so. Maybe he was waiting on an offer from Alcorn State.

Based on his recent comments I’d believe he would be open to take most D-1 coaching jobs. Hard to believe he would turn down App. Plus App is about as close to home for Bobby as any school.

Agree with posts. You left out the NC State 2nd half debacle in the tournament. Price needs to find someone to coach and recruit power forwards and centers.

The smartest move Price could make in the offseason is hire Curtis Withers as an assistant and big man coach and pray his
son commits to us ! Its a Bobby Hugging move, but if it works and its the only way to get a quality big man in here…
so be it !
