I have respect for Lutz but we were treading water with him and going nowhere. Unfortunately with our 2 most recent coaches we went from treading water to drowning.
This was my attitude prior to the most recent losing strength. The team is not playing with heart, we have no defense, we have no recruiting class. We are near the bottom of one of the worst conferences in America. Getting a strong post player would help. But it doesnât fix effort, defense, lack of depth, etc. We are just bad. There is so much on this team that needs to be fixed more than adding a post player.
Bobbyâs time at Charlotte has come and gone. I will be forever grateful for his dedication to Ninerdom. He was the coach here when I was at Charlotte and the old time wins holder. That last fact deserves respect, IMO. Now, I do hope Bobby comes back into the fold as a loyal alum, etc but that will not occur until the current leadership is gone.
Bobbyâs last year saw us with 19 wins and in NCAA talk with 2 weeks to go in the season. Even though we collapsed at the end, I would love to be back at that level. We might all have to come to the conclusion that while Bobby had his issues, he over achieved here. Maybe what we have now is the norm and what we did 95-05 is the exception. Sobering thought.

Yes, and (IIRC) Bobby had/has a winning record against all those great coaches (Pitino, Calipari, Crean, etc) as well, except for Huggins. He did still have the best record against Huggins of any coach in the league.

Yeah, Lutz should have been cut loose in 2007. Thatâs not crazy. Thatâs what should have happened. We actually did have a half of basketball against Mississippi State in which we only scored 9 points. His recruiting results dropped like an anvil when we left the C-USA. He never sold Charlotte to recruits, he sold Louisville, Memphis, Marquette and Cincinnati to recruits. When that was gone he had nothing.
Cincinnati was the only CUSA team that held a winning record against us. The A10 was tickled shitless to have us join at the time. Wow, did we let them down, but we were still somewhat competitive in that conference most years. And then Alan took over and we have had a shitstorm ever since.

It was time to move on from Lutz in 2007. I greatly underestimated the competence of Judy Rose and Phil Dubois to hire a successful basketball coach.
In hindsight, with the shitshow we have become, we probably should have just given Lutz a lifetime contract. How much worse would we really be now? At least we wouldnât have millions in dead money paying coaches not to coach our team.

Coaching into his final contracted year, which prompted him to seek out other coaching jobs. All we heard with Major and now Price is the need to extend contracts for recruiting. Bobby did not get the courtesy and no doubt that impacted his ability to recruit to some degree.[/font][/size]

Coaches make a lot of money now and only stupid ones would have trouble paying the bills if they went unemployed for a couple of years. If I were a coach I would negotiate a deal that gave me more money to hire assistants and staff in lieu of any termination clause. Give me a 5 year contract, each year renew it for another year, and if anyone is unhappy with the situation they can pull the plug and walk away without penalty.
