Calvin Brock Fight: Recaps and Reflections

Just thought I’d post a recap of what happened in the fight and my take on it for anyone who didn’t catch the fight or want to discuss it. Post your own recaps and ideas if ya want.

Caesers Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada - The fight was fought outside in 90+ degree weather. The beginning of the fight was pretty boring. Timur Ibragimov didn’t really seem to make many moves to try and tag Calvin. Clavin was the aggressor for most of the fight. Almost everytime Calvin would make an attack and was getting or was close to getting some good shots on Timur, he grabbed him, many times by the head. Most of the early rounds went on this way, Brock moving forward on Timur, Timur backing away, only to occasionally move up and throw some jabs or small combos. The jabs seemed to be landing for Timur but he rarely tied those into combos. About midway through, Brock got some good shots on Timur’s head. Timur appeared pretty shaken and for a good while only held when Brock moved in for an attack. Timur from this point on seemed almost totally concerned with defense. He stopped throwing as many succesful jabs and combos. Brock continued to move in on Timur and pretty soon it was obvious who was going to win. In the last 3 or 4 rounds, Timur appeared exhausted and ready to leave. His trainer was even heard aggresivly asking him if he wanted him to throw in the towel or if he was going to fight. Many times near the end of the fight, Timur grabbed Brock by the head and even pulled him down or tripped him. After taking some more vicious combos, Timur appeared completely done, putting his hands on his waste for a bit. In the closing seconds, Brock raised his hands almost in triumph in front of Timur, but I think he just wanted to get him to fight for that last bit. When the final bell rang, Timur went over to his corner, put his hands on his corner post, and leaned over in complete exhaustion. Brock won the fight by unanimous decision.

My thoughts are that Brock looked very good. Only for a few short moments did it look like Timur even had a chance. Brock never looked too tired. He rarely initiated any holds or ran away from his opponent. The only punches that seemed to hit him were the jabs Timur threw in the early goings. Jabs are the quickest and hardest of punches to block or dodge so that is good. At one point Brock was close to knocking Timur out but the little punk ran away or held onto Brock til the end of the round. Brock did not look too tired after the fight, despite the heat. He totally outmatched his opponent who was undefeated prior to this bout. I think Brock has a good chance at winning the title, but I’d still like to see how he can do against someone in the top 15.

Might not be the most flashy fighter but the guy keeps winning. Awesome to have Charlotte mentioned with a fighter of his talent.

Very true. I forgot to mention the Charlotte thing. They said he got his degree from UNC Charlotte. I was siked to here that over HBO.

Didn’t get to see the fight but I saw on a website that it said he graduated from “Charlotte Universty” iwas stoked!

maybe he is an avid poster on this website.

49orBust, thanks for providing a recap for those of us that were unable to see the fight.

BTW, that was an excellent recap. Nice job.

[B]Brock beats Ibragimov, still undefeated at 29-0

LAS VEGAS – Unbeaten Calvin Brock won a unanimous decision Saturday against Timur Ibragimov in a heavyweight bout that lacked punch.

The crowd booed often as neither man seemed energetic in temperatures that exceeded 100 degrees in the outdoor arena at Caesars Palace.

The biggest ovation of the night came in the 11th round when Brock (29-0, 22 KOs) twice slipped to the canvas.

The judges unanimously picked Brock by scores of 119-109, 117-111 and 115-113.

Neither fighter seemed willing to trade blows, though Brock occasionally landed a right hand. Ibragimov, from Hallandale, Fla. (21-1-1, 13 KOs), spent most of the night backing up after Brock landed a solid right cross near the end of the fifth.

“I told [promoter] Carl Moretti when the fight was first made that this could be a stinker,” said Brock, from Charlotte, N.C. “Listen, the guy is a safety-first boxer and its not easy to knock out a guy like that.”

Brock weighed in at 224 pounds, while Ibragimov was at 219 pounds.

In the co-feature, Puerto Rican Carlos Quintana survived a first-round knockdown and handed highly regarded Colombian prospect Joel Julio his first loss in a 12-round welterweight bout.

Quintana (23-0, 18 KOs) befuddled Julio (27-1, 24 KOs) with his left-handed style and landed several hard shots that appeared to hurt the Colombian.

Both weighed in at 145 pounds.

we get the point HP :wow:

no need to post 8 times:lmao:

I’m a huge Calvin Brock supporter. I’ve been preaching him to my friends for a few years now. I was so excited to hear that he was going to be on HBO. I got a lot of my friends to watch and they were very much disappointed. He did win and I am happy for that, but he didn’t win the way he needed to. I know everyone says a win is a win, but in boxing that isn’t true. Timur Ibragimov was an opponent that Brock could’ve made a name against had he dominated the fight. If he wanted a lot of fans and big time pay days he needed to reel them in last night. I was disappointed but I’ll continue to support Brock. He has a lot of talent and a lot of heart and is a flat out good guy.

AMEN!!

I said this last night in the shoutbox and (of course) got slammed for it.

I’m glad he won…I’m glad he represents our school…but that performance last night was NOT the performance of a Heavyweight Champion of ANY sort.

He was VERY average against an awful opponent that was no threat at all to Brock. Nothing at all to be impressed with…from last night’s fight at least.

For comparison sake:

In hoops, we finished 2nd in the A-10 last year. Sounds great until you see us actually play and recognize how bad the competition was. It didn’t fool the NCAA…thus no Tourney bid. We were an average team in a bad league.

Same can be said about Brock and the Heavyweight division. He may be ranked high, but the Division is very weak and he has marginal skills at best.

At least in boxing…you always have a “puncher’s” chance I guess.

(now…let the KTown bashing and labeling begin)

He got the win and that was about it. He did dominate but should have been able to finish the guy. I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I liked the feature they did on him before the fight. Showed him as a kid boxing, his olympic fights and showed him teaching kids tap dancing and talked about his dad who is still a co-trainer. It didn’t show the University but did talk about him getting his degree and working in banking. Also, apparently he trains in Pittsburgh.
