Carolina Hoodie.

There seems to be a logical growth progression to what you said. But you actually were able to see progress on the subject of name change.

I have a fear that one day I will hear that I am now an alum of UNC-Chapel Hill, Charlotte Extension.

(What the heck was ECTC?? = …)

East Carolina College > East Carolina Teachers College > East Carolina University. (There could have been one more, I just cant remember right now)

All the UNC-CH people still like to refer to us as ECTC or EZU. (this is where the elitist part comes in)

They have done some pretty shady stuff to us as well. There was a nice piece on it a while back in the University paper (one was trying to keep us out of the UNC system by saying we could only get in if we went in with NCA&T, thinking we wouldnt do that because of the race factor, kinda backfired on them)
As a former orientation counselor, we do try to pound it into their heads not to bring other schools gear and by Charlotte gear. We even did a skit on it saying that bringing Wake, State, Duke and Tarheel gear is not “fashionable” at charlotte. But we can only do so much in a day and a half.

Please don’t take my comments personally. They are not directed at you, but they are directed at the system in place.

This is a perfect place to identify where the system is broke.

Throw the damn skits out. very bad idea. If I was an incoming Freshman, I wouldn’t take it seriously.

Get Coach Lutz, or at least one of his assistants, at these events preaching to the incoming students why the hell school pride is important. Hell, for that matter, get Coach Hibbs, Coach Aston and the soccer coaches in there as well.

If the teams can’t find some time to appeal to their incoming fan base, why should they expect all the students to take pride in their respective sports.

Using a generic counselor or even a token representative from the Athletic Dept. sends a very weak message.

If I were a Freshman who grew up a Tarheel fan and was told that the John Doe, from the 49ers ticket office, was here to tell me how great 49er basketball is, I would not be impressed.

I think the advantage was that you weren't dropping a "UNC". But I am kind of surprised they didn't try to make you add it in at any point. What years were these changes?

NOt sure off the top of my head. I’ll find out and post it when I get a chance. I know we were ECC early in the 1900s, dont think we got included into the UNC system (switched to ECU) until the 60’s.

I think a video with all the 49ers coaches on it would be a good idea, maybe even players. Then have students talk in person about 49er Pride, and how supporting other schools only hurts them and our school.

Here’s the link to the Wiki page for the Univeristy of North Carolina, listing all 17 institutions and the year each became part of the UNC system. ECU was in a group of 10 schools that joined in 1972.

clt says that wiki pedia is wrong. unc is only the school in chapel hill. all other schools are inferior and basically satellites.

in honor of ConcordNiners…

This would be an appropriate and relevant place to bring up our new friend ConcordNiners, who ardently and passionately cheers for UNC-CH, as well as cheering for the Niners. Perhaps Jon Lipsitz would have something to say about this…

Yea, that just doesn't work. It's like being a Jew but rooting passionately for Hitler.

That’s much different than pulling for two basketball teams.

I’ve read coach Lipsitz letter, and it’s fantastic. I have nothing against people changing their favorite teams and leaving them behind. My brother was a die-hard UNC fan until the day he got into Duke. Some people change, and some don’t. I’ll always be a UNC fan and nothing anybody will say can change that. Not to take anything away from coach Lipsitz, but his position is a little bit different than any fans. If Lutz went to South Alabama, do you think he would be wearing a UNCC shirt around campus? It’s a little bit different considering he is coaching here. It’s not like hes a student transfering here. You guys can hate on me all you want, it doesn’t bother me. Most of my family has either graduated or are attending ACC schools and UNCC. I’m a die-hard UNC and UNCC fan and i’ll always be.

Sure, but we aren't just talking about rooting for two basketball teams. It's that it is Carolina. UNC and UNC alumni screw us over all the time. We are 14th out of 16th in funding in large part due to people who are associated with UNC-Chapel Hill. We have the worst student to teacher ratio in the entire UNC System in large part due to people who are associated with UNC-Chapel Hill. UNC gets credit for a lot of good stuff we do. The Charlotte Observer, largely staffed by UNC grads, has not in the past given us adequate coverage and has given UNC egregious amounts.

It is the fact that UNC and a lot of its graduates hold us down that upsets us so much. It is not just a basketball issue but an issue of our school being mistreated by UNC-Chapel Hill. I love UNC Charlotte, we all do, and when we see someone try to hurt it and treat it so unfairly, you can only expect us to get mad. The success of the UNC basketball team gives them more money and power and in turn this helps perpetuate this mistreatment of our University and perception of us being a little red headed step child of UNC. So when we see someone supporting Carolina yet attending here, it hurts. I mean, I know it hurts me at least.

So no, it’s not as bad as a Jew supporting Hitler because that was a hyperbole, but it is in the same vein.

That is the truth right there. I hardly ever see UNCC on the front page. The UMass game recap was on the last page of the sports section I believe, as was the Temple game.

I don’t have that much knowledge into all of what goes on between the two schools, because I personally don’t care for anything at UNC other than the basketball team. I will say that I think you are basing your opinion of UNC on just a select number of alumni there. Not everybody there is like that and I know people there that feel the same way you do about how the school gets treated. A school like UNC is ALWAYS going to get treated better simply because of the history of the school. I don’t think something like that is uncommon, and i’m sure other states have the same problem. I think UNCC should get more coverage and more support from the state, but I don’t think it would be fair if they take away everything from UNC in the process. I don’t think you should base your opinion of the school just on a select group of individuals.

I’m not trying to get into a big arguement but that is how I feel about it, and most of you probably wont agree with me.

UNCC?

Let’s get one thing straight. You can be a fan of two teams, but you can’t be a “die-hard” of two teams. Period.

A true DIE-HARD fan would NEVER pull as passionately for another school/team as he does his own.

If you were really a die-hard Charlotte fan, you wouldn’t be passionate at all about UNC. I am NOT saying you can’t also pull for the Tar Heels to do well, but if you are a “die-hard” fan, you really wouldn’t care too much about UNC.

Maybe in your opinion you can’t be, but in my opinion I don’t see it as a problem. I would see it as a problem if somebody was pulling for both Charlotte and a team in their conference. I don’t see it as a problem considering the two teams have only played once in the last 10 years.

I thought it was twice but whatever. I don’t have a problem with you having two teams, I don’t get as irritated as some on here the only question I have is if the two played each other, who are you rooting for? Charlotte or Chapel Hill?

I grew up a Duke fan and still am, but if they played I’d pull for Charlotte. The easiest reason why… If Duke wins, nobody bats an eyelash, it is expected. If Charlotte wins, it could do wonders for exposure, recruiting, and much more. There’s more reasons, but that’s the easiest way to make people understand it.

Yes, that’s the ultimate question. I grew up a die hard Tar Heel fan but once I started Charlotte I lost all interest in the Holes. Can’t stand them now and hope they lose every game.
