CCT "A-10 Quick Hitters" with a good word on Niners

Collegechalktalk.com: Atlantic 10 Quick Hitters - Dec 23

In the Butler section: This program simply thrives in big games, against “better teams”.

And that is what we are missing. In big games we have not played our best or coached our best. Thus far we are who we are, no better no worse. Have to find a way to show up in the big games. We used to show up big in big games and then fail to show up in the little games. Now we show up in the little games but can’t quite come up big in the big games.

Really looking forward to the VCU game now. The Henry-Webster matchup should be fun to watch.

“If you haven’t watched Virginia Commonwealth this season get to a television. Shaka Smart’s club plays suffocating defense that seems almost unfair at times. Twisting that vice grip on opposing teams is Briante Weber, a 6-2 sophomore guard. Watching Weber play man-to-man defense is alone worth your time or money. Weber currently averages 3.3 steals a game (41 steals on the season). Xavier as a team has produced 51 takeaways (let that sink in). Most impressive is the fact that Weber has only been whistled for 25 fouls in the process; a sign of perfectly timed aggression and risk taking. Weber is a no brainer for first team all defense and he may wind up being the rare guard who wins Defensive Player of the Year honors.”

I’m disappointed when we don’t win the big games.

I’m pissed as F@*% when we lose the small games.

Being just disappointed is better on my life expectancy.

Sounds to me that Weber is a better version of Henry…

Latest from Ian:

I received a lot of feedback last week on twitter after penning a few words about Alan Major and Charlotte’s hot start to the year. Some readers felt that by starting my article with the 49ers and by speaking so highly of them was a way of me declaring them the league’s best team. Not the intent.

While Charlotte has clearly exceeded expectations they are not the best team in the league. Not by a long shot. But they deserve ink for playing good basketball and winning games that they should. Something that other teams in the league have failed to do. As of today, I still consider Major’s club a mid-pack team in this deep Atlantic 10. That being said, give credit where credit is deserved… and Charlotte deserves credit for the 9-0 start and 11-2 record.

This may be true…but winning the “big games” is wayyyy more fun, plus “Joe Fan” remembers those games as well which is good for growing the fan base.Thats why they’re called “big games” (ie; people are watching).

Ian on opening A-10 play:

La Salle @ Charlotte (Wednesday) If someone would have told me three months ago La Salle’s visit to Charlotte would showcase a pair of ten-win plus teams I would have laughed. Today, La Salle and Charlotte are the teams laughing. While I did see a fast start for the Explorers, I can’t say I saw the same for the 49ers. Now, the two meet down south in a matchup of darkhorses who could challenge for the upper tier of the league. La Salle will attempt to push the basketball, as they always do, and find as many open three point attempts as possible for Ramon Galloway & Co. La Salle is second in the A10 in scoring and second in three point percentage (38%). With their terrific backcourt of Galloway, Mills, Duren and now Garland, La Salle is explosive and dynamic in transition. Charlotte will need to slow the pace a bit and be judicious in their shot selection. Long shots will lead to long rebounds and run outs for La Salle. The 49ers need to find quality shots (Charlotte is second to last in the A10 in three point percentage shooting 28%) inside the arc and ideally near the paint allowing them to play decent transition defense. Alan Major’s club needs to play true to its strengths to win this game; if they get in a track meet with La Salle they will come out 0-1.
