Charlotte Hornets 🐝

Hornets never played at the original Charlotte Coliseum (now Bojangles) on Independence Boulevard, though the ABA Carolina Cougars and our own Niners did.

Probably thinking of the now demolished Coliseum 2.0 on Tyvola Road, which did host 371 consecutive NBA sell-outs from December 1988 to November 1997.

Okay. We I was at UNCC I knew that as Independence Arena.

Those of us who don’t appreciate the destruction of perfectly good buildings refer to it as “The Blowed Up Coliseum”.

It made a great temporary shelter for evacuees from Hurricane Katrina in 2006 after the downtown arena had replaced it.

The Tyvola arena was designed to host the ACC Tournament, not a NBA team. It was built on a reclaimed landfill, so the land was cheap. It was near the airport, so teams could exit quickly when they were eliminated from Tournaments. It had ample parking to accommodate sellout crowds.

My wife and I worked at a concession stand there to help pay for our daughters’ competition dance fees.

The arena operated at a huge profit and with some of that money the city was able to refurbish and reopen the Independence Arena where the Checkers play. My wife and I worked there, too.

Had my HS and College graduations at the blower up arena.

Also worked concessions and/ or parking for many a game / concert. Was a great way for a broken college student to make a few bucks AND get to ditch out as soon as the headliner act came on. So many great shows. One of my favorites was U2 with The Pixies opening for them - think it was 92 or 93. I actually got to see a little of both of their sets.

I watched a ton of stuff there. Niner’s, Hornets, Rage, and concerts galore and I also graduated there.

I hated that arena with a passion cause the traffic was so awful.

Random memory of the Tyvola coliseum along with having my uncc graduation there, I had my CMPD Academy graduation in 1993 inside the Crown Club w/ in the coliseum. The bar was unfortunately closed. A cool thing about having our bball games there was scoring the Crown Club passes and getting free liquor drinks at halftime

Just here to complain. Tried to get some tickets to the play-in tournament. Ticketmaster is the biggest pile of shit on the internet. Bots probably bought up everything, but me in a single browser getting blocked/paused. Tried switching to cell, same. Even then went to vpn. Never been so frustrated.
