Thought this was interesting on Fox News Rising.
Both reps from Presbyterian and CMC can see the potential for a partnership with UNC-Charlotte for a future medical school.
The interest is there. Charlotte needs it, UNC Charlotte needs it. The state needs it, or else Chapel Hill wouldn’t have expanded. So what is the problem??? GET IT STARTED
Medical School > Law School > Football > Name Change
Dr. Reilly steps up again!
The problem all the time is Chapel Hill doesn’t share. The extra problem right now is the economy. Even when the economy turns around Chapel Hill won’t allow it.

I don’t know how - but some how we have to put a poison pill on it that CH can’t block. Once we had the Charlotte donors, our students and our alumni behind football CH couldn’t stop it. If we can lock in a large funding source and get the Charlotte business community behind us it will make it very unpopular for them to block us. Just have to make it politically difficult for them to say no and expose why they would say no.
I’ll make a not so bold prediction. Every person on this board this year will be dead and buried before UNC Charlotte EVER gets a medical school. Now if I’m wrong I will be very happy about it.
49RFBNow is a damn pinko Commie.
I have a friend who’s in the State House who went to UNC Charlotte. If we can convince him, he’s very persuasive, & can convince the NCGA.
LOL! Even Stalin said something truthful from time to time.
My fav and it could apply to this situation too:
“Quantity has a quality all its own.”
clt applauds the fox news for at least asking why we aren’t involved.
I thought the CMC guy was going to choke on the words “maybe have an increased role” (regarding our involvement).

I don’t think so. We have enough local faculty to teach both the basic and clinical classes at whatever school of medicine would be at CMC. No need to be build facilities, the hospital is already there. The MEB building could become the actual classroom center. Or a new building could house it. CMC has a TON of land banked in that area. You have the front surface lots where the “Doctors Building” used to be. You have almost all of Garden Ridge Terrace that CMC owns (both sides).
The key is having enough money in the budget to build it.
I don’t understand this board as a new user. Why are you guys so jaded? You should be happy UNC affiliated with CMC. Eventually UNCC will get a dividend from it. Just as our sports teams get notoriety from being affiliated with Chapel Hill sports. We shouldn’t be in the business of trumping Chapel Hill but complimentary to the system.

Okay, before the new guy gets trashed for his comments, remember that he’s NEW to the board. Now, will someone please inform him of why we have issues with the UNCCH affiliation… We can begin with just a list. I’ll start with a couple:
- We don’t get notoriety from our “affiliation” with UNCCH athletics. If we did, we would not have dropped “UNC” from our official athletic name in 2000. Quote from Judy Rose [via our wiki]:
“We’re proud to be members of the University of North Carolina university system. But, frankly, we are tired of being confused with other institutions or having our own identity misused and misconstrued. It’s harder to make a name for yourself, when your name keeps getting confused. Not only will this logo simplify matters, but it gives the program an exciting new look that better captures our essence.”
2. Many a UNCCH alum sits on the UNC board of governors. They do not give fair credit to UNC Charlotte. They cut our funding [2008, I believe, we were 1 of 3 of the 17 schools in the UNC system to not get any additional funding. UNCCH received some 50 million or so in appropriations for a science building. We asked, “Why did we not get any more money?” they said “you got yours last year” - UNCCH received 100 million the year before FOR THE SAME BUILDING. At the time, we were slated as “the fastest growing university in the UNC system”. Make sense? Nope. Politics, baby.]
3. UNCCH “affiliation” if you want to call it that causes our brand to be misconstrued in the academic community. Look at the “Name confusion log” thread. There are numerous posts in which MAJOR academic findings have taken place at UNC Charlotte. The credit has gone to UNCCH. No one made the effort to change it. They get OUR credit.
4. Does not having a “UNCCH affiliation” hurt NC State? How about Appalachian State? East Carolina? Nope. They don’t need it. Guess what, neither do we.
I didn’t know most of this until joining. But I’ve read it, plain face, on many media outlets. I’ve talked to many alums. I’ve been in the “real world”. Being affiliated with UNCCH doesn’t do us any good anymore. We’re not the university equivalent of a high school student anymore. We can stand on our own. It’s time to go to college. I’m not saying disassociate with the UNC system - it’s EXTREMELY well respected. But if “UNC” in our name is because it’s “good to be affiliated with UNC” then I don’t want it. If it’s because we’re developing our OWN brand, then fine.
Just thought you should know…

Hello Metro- I have missed you over here.
zero i think your sarcasm meter is broken.
It was a nice post though. Very moving.
I think zero’s post should be standard reading along with the required terms and conditions one must agree to when joining the board. Put it up front and make sure all of our posters are well educated. We are Charlotte!
