Charlotte Talks UNC Charlotte
2:53 - Mike Collins just gave Ben Comstock an amazing introduction where he listed numerous awards that were bestowed upon him and he made the little creep sound like someone who really had a great grasp on the current state of the institution. After listing all the awards, Mike Collins casually asked, “What is the USA Today All-Academic team?” - an award Ben Comstock received. This question was just too much for poor Ben. “It is… A… Uhhh… Rec…it’s in recognition of outstanding…uhm…schollegiate (Yes, he said ‘Schollegiate’!) athle…uhm…collegiate ath.” This question is posing quite a challenge for Ben. "Students who…uhm…display not only great academics but also have…uhm…something that they’ve really contributed to their…uh…universities and their students. Mike Collins congratulated Ben and made a mental note to keep the kid away from sharp objects.
Priceless! I was thinking the exact same thing when I listened to it after work yesterday.

Survivor, you are really coming into your own with these parodies & commentaries. They are absolutely hilarious.

Does everyone know where Mac Everett went to College??

Reading survivor’s commentary is making me relive the hororifying moments from yesterday when I listened to that suckupfest. My reactions were identical. I am so fired up!

Let’s cut to the chase - UNCDP (and his well coached puppet - Comstock - just switch the O’s to U’s), are absolutely terrified of pissing off Raleigh with not only a football push, but with any vision of Charlotte as anything other than a step down from Big Brother up north.

Survivor didnt mention it - but UNCDP spent a lot of airtime talking about how we were gonna have enough money to build enough buildings and hire enough teachers to push our enrollment to his 35k goal. He is so ****ing terrified of pissing off the bluebloods up north, including Erskine. God forbid they move us down the funding list cause we wanted to become a real university.

My question is: WHY YOU DUMBASS?? We’re 13th out of 16 right now. What have we got to lose? When you have a short stack of chips, you go all in, you don’t let yourself get whittled down over several hands.

My stupid poker analogies aside, it’s absolutely ridiculous to cower in fear of the highly political state system and grovel at their feet for them to take us into their bed and give us whatever shitty scraps they want from their table. Screw them. Seriously. We’ve proven that we DO NOT NEED THEM FOR FOOTBALL, and over time, football and a better university image and student experience could generate enough alumni giving that state funding is greatly reduced in importance.

No, instead, UNCDP is hell bent on keeping us crack-whore dependent on the scraps from the state’s plate, refusing to have any growth vision whatsoever, outside of a “nice satellite campus of our great benefactor - the mighty UNC Chapel Hill - the beacon of enlightment and all things good”.

**** you UNCDP. And you too, Comstock, for being a puppet. And double **** you both for being such weenies that you tried to dodge the real issues that entire interview, despite Mike’s excellent attempts to steer the conversation in the right direction.

Our administration is a joke. God bless you Mike Collins for trying, and for your self restraint.

How pathetic is our school?

I read the synopsis here and that interview was hilarious. No idea who the host is… but Mike Collins is the man. Someone should email him, dubois, everett, and the SBP the synopsis.

I think someone needs to send NA’s reply to UNCDP. Actually, send Survivor’s too.

NA, you’re all over it. Great response. As always, great job by Survivor.

Mike Collins, Host/Charlotte Talks

I’d really like to send him Survivor’s commentary, but I think that should be up to him.

That’s funny you mentioned it. I sent an email to Collins last night at about 2am and already I’ve gotten a couple responses in return. That’s double the amount of responses I have ever received from the emails I’ve sent to the school’s administration in the past (either I’m blacklisted or I go to their ‘bulk’ folder).

I just sent him a link to this thread. The station also sent me this info:
I just sent him a link to this thread.
That’s great. He’s gonna think I’m pyscho after all those f-bombs. Oh well. :lmao:

Agreed on all counts and an additional hats off to Mike Collins who asked the right questions … Mike must have felt like a horse owner during that interview.

I just finished listening to the show and reading the thread. I have to say, I sense quite a bit of frustration among all of you. Just a little haha.

But seriously, I found a few points very frustrating and probably the same ones as all of you. UNC-DP’s love fest for UNC killed me. I was about to start yelling at my computer but restrained myself. When he asked Ben about the main issues being discussed by SGA and credit cards and tax forms were brought up, that was rather upsetting as well (sarcasm). But I have to say, I’m not surprised. When the senate passed the bill to suggest the name change to University of Charlotte and Ben vetoed it because he felt he needed to support the Chancellor, I lost all respect for him.

I will say this, however, if you read survivor’s synopsis before listening for yourself, I think it may have tainted your perception of the conversation a little. I agree that some things were horrible, but I think survivor blew many things out of proportion. I’m just trying to be honest here.

Personally, I’d LOVE to go on the air and discuss this circus we have going on right now. People need to hear the truth, and not this political BS.

I CANNOT BELIEVE Comstock made the 3% Chapel Hill comment. What a MORON. Way to make the school look like his second choice. He doesn’t deserve to be SBP. :unhappy:

I have known Ben for a few years. He’s a smart guy and generally good with people. The interview wasn’t his best moment, that’s for sure. I haven’t talked to him about it, but listening to it, it sure sounded like the three of them had a powwow before hand and decided they would avoid the football and name change issues altogether if possible. I cringed at the beginning when he stuttered out his answer about the academic all-america thing, just like everyone else. Blame it on nerves. I would be nervous as hell if I was in that booth.

He IS a supporter of the football initiative. He has been to a CFI meeting and expressed his desire to have a team. I wish he would have said that was the biggest issue students have on campus. But, the other issues he stated are issues that some students are concerned about. When I was there, it was inconvenient to not be able to use my debit or credit card for food. You had to go to the computer lab, transfer money to your 49er card, and then go eat. Not necessarily tax forms. I don’t know where that came from. They’re at the library around the corner. And on the internet. That was dumb.

Unfortunately, Charlotte is a second choice for a lot of the students. Ask around. Many are there because they didn’t get into this school or that school. They will tell you they are there for a year before they transfer to State or Chapel Hill. Maybe the student body president should not be one of these people, but when he is, does it surprise you, really? Not saying that Charlotte was his second choice, but you’re right that it sounded like it.

I’m not here to defend him. I just wanted to point out a few pieces of information and provide my point of view. BTW, Charlotte wasn’t my first choice, either. I got waitlisted at my first choice, went somewhere else, and transfered to Charlotte after my sophomore year. I don’t think I had even heard of the school before my brother came here. So, people who don’t have Charlotte as a first choice can still be supporters of the school once they get here. Second choice isn’t bad if it is the right choice. Just sayin’.

I think the main problem is that he made the statement. Since he’s the SGA Prez, he should know how to use a little diplomacy.
I think the main problem is that he made the statement. Since he’s the SGA Prez, he should know how to use a little diplomacy.
either that or qualify the statement by adding, “but after 4 years here I couldn’t imagine having wanted to go anywhere else. carolina blue is for babies… real men wear green.” or something like that.

I don’t know Ben Comstock and he might be a great person but that’s not the point.

I might make a bad fireman - maybe I would use my firefighting equipment improperly if I tried to join a firefighting unit. That wouldn’t make me a bad person, just a bad firefighter. Comstock is a bad student representative. His duty is not to try and convince students that Dubois is right and they are wrong, his duty is to be the voice of the students. If he is unable to act accordingly and will not fight on behalf of the students - then he would be obligated to step down from his position if he truly valued a representative government. It’s not a monarchy where the leader acts however he pleases unless convinced otherwise. Likewise with Phil Dubois as the representative of the campus. He shouldn’t act on his own behalf while ignoring the desires of the students and alumni that compose the university.

Yeah, I have to say that interview led me to believe Mr. Comstock is facing the wrong direction. He is to go from students to Admins not the other way.

When the senate passed the bill to suggest the name change to University of Charlotte and Ben vetoed it because he felt he needed to support the Chancellor, I lost all respect for him.

As I’ve said a hundred times before, it gets vetoed every single year by the President, including presidents before him. Don’t blame that on him. Its politics.

No, it’s called not having any balls.

No, it's called not having any balls.

Maybe he just plain disagrees with it.
Maybe he just plain disagrees with it.
If that is the case, fine but don’t play it off as every other SGA does the same thing it’s just politics… You are elected to be the voice of the students, not merely to have your “ideas” handed to you by the Chancelor.
