Charlotte to Hire Michigan associate Head Coach Biff Poggi as new Head Football Coach

Is this the guy from Back to the Future?

Just received the notice from Charlotte. Everything you have heard is true. We get Biff. I pray he is good and can recruit.

Well, he’s apparently wealthy so maybe he will just buy players

I don’t care about his age. I do care he is 62 without fbs HC experience

Did we really pick this unknown over Skip Holtz? Is that real? Tell me it’s not real!

Well not who I would have pursued but hell, Go Niners!

Well…I hope it works out. It doesn’t feel like a homerun hire but that doesn’t mean it won’t end up being a great hire. I don’t understand why we didn’t hire someone with FBS head coaching experience.

I really hope he can get the job done here. Next year is going to be tough no matter what. Put a good staff together and lets get some talent on both sides of the ball.

Jim Harbaugh at Michigan went 2&4 in 2020. Pogge joined him and is credited for the turnaround at Michigan as they went 12&2 in 2021and undefeated at 10&0 this year. That after building a national football power in high school that people would not play because they were too strong and fast. I agree this is somewhat of a gamble but certainly not a Healy type gamble. I’m going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and hope for the best. Go Niners

Ok I will be the dissenting voice here. I like it. We weren’t going to get a top name that is going to Power 5. I didn’t want a retread, even a successful one because, honestly - if they came to Charlotte it was just to make it back to having their name in the shuffle for bigger teams. If we went with a retread that has had moderate success but has not knocked it out of the park… that is what we may be… staying in park.

This guy is a FOOTBALL guy. He loves football. He does not seem to strive to the limelight. I don’t see that he wants to move up into P5. The fact he stuck with a winning high-school program he built for so many years and funded himself shows his love for the game, kids, and the program. That is what we need.

It is not a sexy hire - but I have confidence it may very well be the right hire. There won’t be any glitter, club LIT (thank god!) , interviews about the baby-faced coach, interviews about past college stops, etc… it will all be on Football, Charlotte, and this guy finally gets to show what he has learned over the past 40 years in football.

I want to see what kind of coaching staff he assembles, that will tell us a lot about his potential

My worries:

  1. No college head coaching experience.
  2. No recruiting college level players.
  3. Doesn’t know the southern states.
  4. Not coming aboard until after Michigan’s season is over (that could be mid January).
  5. Not listed as on the Michigan website as a coach (?).
  6. No one to keep the team together and hit the recruiting/transfer portal until January.
  7. Are we getting a reported great high school coach.
8, Is this Hill’s answer to save his own job.
  8. We heard that Healy was an absolute homerun hire from other coaches so some of the comments from other coaches means squat.
  9. Can’t believe this is the best we can do to rebuild our football program.

Have no choice now but to hope all of my concerns for naught and Poggi can work miracles.

I agree. He seems like the CEO type of HC. Interested to see what his network looks like. Looks like Harbaugh and Nick Saban are speaking out for him. That’s a good start.

Debo spoke out for Healy saying he was a homerun hire. Too bad that it was a foul ball.

clt says we have money to hire staff now!

Skip Holtz would not have been a home run hire, but we would know that we are going to be competing for a lower level bowl game every year, and hovering between 5-7, 6-6, 7-5, 8-4 most years, which is mediocre consistency, with this hire I think that we are either going to be 2-10 or 10-2 for the next few years

How can you not like this guy? He looks like he does not give a F#$# about anything except kicking someone’s ass on the football field!!!

I really want to know why we skipped Skip.
