Reminded me of some of our early games last season. We were down in the first half and then came back to win. I thought we were on our way to another one.
I was thinking the same thing. We’ve done this so many times.
But this time, something was missing.
And I think that something was a guy called Leemire Goldwire…
Don't worry. they'll win 16-18 games or so this year. it won't be that bad. still a very young team. they just don't have the outside shooting this year. they have a lot of slashers who can score sometimes off the dribble, but other times miss 3 foot shots. These guys are not shooters as a result shooting will be a problem all year. never seen so many short shots missed.
rebounding will be a problem all year since they just don’t have a big man. This may be one of the worst rebounding teams they’ve had in a long time.
Their defense seems to be ok.
The problem with our rebounding is the same problem we have every year on rebounding. We don’t box out. It has nothing to do with our size, it has to do with the fact that we try to out jump and out-athelete people rather than boxing out. I didn’t see the game, but I’m sure from watching every other year that our shooting was poor because of shot selection. We have more shooters on this team than we did last year. Bad excuse. Our players constantly get beat by well coached teams because we lack the simple fundamentals that should be stressed. Please do not use the “young” excuse. And for that matter, don’t use any excuse. We’ve been “rebuilding” now for three years, and we only lost one valuable player last year. Lee was a big loss, but we have everybody else back. This team has no excuses not to make the NCAA and get to at least the second round. I think it’s funny that we expect a few of these losses every year. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Losses like this shouldn’t happen, but they always do. Our players need to get up for ALL games, not just “big ones.” The score I saw from the first half makes me realize why we lost. The same reason we always lose to ****ty teams we shouldn’t lose to. All of the above.
aight, i didn’t read through all of these comments, but i breezed through them…
and i know this is my 5th post or something, but this is all i have to say…
first half sucked, perimeter d, terrible, okay we got that
second half, phil was amazing, coley scored off dunks and free throws (not complaining…)
defense got better, until about the last minute
only thing that sticks out in my mind was the ian air ball (wide open i might add…), the dijuan turnover with about 45 seconds to go and the missed free throw. he didn’t lose the game, for we should’ve made a few lay ups through out the game (and that three…), but hey, bobby will watch the film, learn from it, and get us ready for app. we just need to come out with the same intensity that we had in the second half.

they missed several shots that were wide open or shots within 3 feet of the basket. if you didnt see the game, you can’t comment on shots can you? we do not have shooters on this team. we have guys that can take it to the basket, but we don’t have many pure shooters. i saw a lot of shots bricked tonight. its just the way this team is.
we’ve had very good rebounding teams in the past. this just isn’t one of them.
lastly, this is not a 2nd round NCAA team. not this year.
-Free throws were fantastic (nice to a consistency this year, was ironic that we lose an a clutch missed free throw though)
-Glad to see Bobby attack the basket for the game and not jacking a three (questionable whether Harris should have been then man to do, would have liked to see Anjuan, Charlie, or Lamont have the shot.)
The bad:
-missed f-ing layups. I counted 3, Dewhurst’s was critical.
-case of the terrible 3’s…airball city from the corners.
-rebounding…I think its been established.
-looked lifeless on the offensive. Couldn’t get the ball inside. Too much passing around the deep perimeter. Looked the best when we drove and kicked out.
-taken out of our uptempo game by ticky tack fouls, timeouts, and turnovers.
-lack of defense…we lost on two uncontested three’s…should not happen.
-critical turnover in the end…we must protect the ball.
Overall it was a pretty lousy game to watch. The referee’s were horrible tonight. Too many ticky tack fouls were called (I feel as if we were catching the brunt of them). We must play uptempo and push the ball down the court. Our half court offense is garbage. Our perimeter defense…garbage. For happy with the free throw shooting…without it we lose big.
Different year, same old story. We always lose an early game to a team we should beat… being a home game where we had a 7 point lead in the closing minutes makes this one even more painful. We didn’t play well at all in the first half… better in the second, but we still aren’t hitting on all cylinders. Our defense needs some work… we are giving up way too many open shots.
Surprisingly, we look solid from the FT line this year.
Phil Jones looked good. Nice to have a big man that can hit FTs.
Um… I thought we were going to run more set plays this year, what happened with that?
And the final huddle with 5.5, was Bobby like “well guys, i think im supposed to make a play here, but instead I’m thinking about what I want from Jack in the Box after the game. Figure it out and make something happen, maybe try to draw a foul, or er, uh, something.”
to think, last year we were great at halton, and didn’t lose one until we got into conference play against richmond. (we did lose to maryland but that was at bobcats arena)
We played 3 halves of ****ty basketball. The second half tonight was awesome and I hope Phil keeps up what he had going. We are showing improvement and if we keep it up we will still be ok. ODU isn’t a terrible team and this shouldn’t prove to be a terrible loss, but was a game we should have won.
FTs were EXCELLENT!!
Rashad Coleman is a BALLER!! Just gotta hit the shots consistently. Same to Mack.
BIG PHIL HAS ARRIVED!!! Please stay.
Cover the 3 ball!!! Holy cow. (That last three was well covered. No one come on here saying that last three was open and it was only made because he was open.)
Cover the 3 ball, take better shots, and hit more of them and that game was ours.
Keep yours heads up, Niners. We’ll get App.
I’d also like to give props to NNN. Way to not freak out. We’re growing.
We shot great from the FT Line, this game was ours to have after a great second half come back. Why are we trapping with a lead with less than a minute left??? They hit 2 3s they wouldn’t have even shot if it was straight up man to man defense. What is Lutz thinking???
Because Bobby always does this. In his whole career at Charlotte, we have never been able to make the trap work. And again, it did not work.
Um... I thought we were going to run more set plays this year, what happened with that?

There was a play, Harris the full length of the court, bigs crash the glass. And that’s exactly what happened. The shot didn’t fall and the tip ins didn’t get tipped in.
Just get a little tired of this every single year. ODU? We better do something or ASU will....
I don't know how good APP is, but ODU is usually better than APP..... just trying to stay positive.
not tryin to stir things up, but i looked over at ODU's board. Came up with this...
The place looked empty. Charlotte could compete for the top four in the CAA, but their arena would not be in the top half for toughest places to play. Bring on UAB.
I have to admit, but he made a valid point. Where was everyone?
Phil looks like he will get better every game.
Jethro Tull looks like he may have regressed during the off-season
-Defense has got to get a little better
-Rebounding has to get a little better
-Mack has to shoot at a higher percentage
-and… believe it or not, I think we have to get Ian and/or Coleman more/better open looks at 3
