The entire package is likely in the $400000 range. The base salary paid by the University was $155000 (according to today’s Observer) when signed in 2001. A buyout would not be that ridiculously expensive for any larger school.
Does it now make sense to everyone why Melvin would’ve bolted back in 1998 for a package then worth $800000 yearly? One can’t fault a young man for financially setting up his family for life.
