clt rants about name change, and then something happened

It’s just intended to make a point, not to be offensive. Sure we can all agree slavery is evil in all it’s forms.
You are trivializing slavery by comparing it to our name change. Pretty simple and a pretty shitty way to make a point. Further, if I were a black kid being recruited by Charlotte and saw this on NNN it would have me thinking twice about what kind of fanbase we have.
People need to get over what happened to other people over a century ago. Slavery has affected all races and was caused by all races. I am pretty sure no one on this board or viewing this board has participated in the act of slavery as an owner, trader, or a slave. Also, one person making a joke would not be construed as this is the image of the fanbase. Like it or not the fanbase goes well beyond this forum. if a potential recruit decides this is not the place for them because of a joke, they are not mature enough or educated enough to attend our University. I thought the post was not even close to being offensive compared to some of the other things put on this board.
Yeah let’s get over slavery by comparing it to the UNC Charlotte name change and posting photos of a slave about to take a beating. This thread should be moved to the gulag and quick. Sorry I have little tolerance for this bs and expect more from UNC Charlotte alumni.

It was a TV movie. None of it was real. Lavar Burton was never beaten by a white actor with a whip. But just because you’re sensitive to it and I’m not interested in turning this into a debate on white guilt, I took it down.

I agree.

Now we know NinerMike has a hot button besides the O and it is slavery ;D

And what do these 2 topics have in common? They both suck.

A lot of nn.n have “a black friend.” Ya dig?

there aren’t a lot of black posters here anymore for a reason, but I guess it is because they are too sensitive. Same reason women don’t post here I guess?

If you don’t want to have this conversation you should probably think about why it is you don’t want to have it. I’m also ashamed that anyone who graduated college is would be gunshy about addressing race relations or any other major issue with our country. Even on a sports message board.

Just one big hot button for not tolerating bullshit and stupidity.

clt says back to the name change.

What I don’t like about this whole deal is that someone can’t post what they want on an anonymous message board because some find it offensive. Anyone can find anything people say offensive. I don’t think anyone really suggests that the UNC part of Charlotte is even remotely like slavery. That is why it is a joke and can be easily seen as such. Like I said before, every race has been a slave, but the joke wouldn’t have been as clear had it been a picture of Asians or white people in a field. This is because the moment you say slavery in this country people think of Africans being beaten by white people. In other countries it would have been a different race. Here is another example of what a joke is.

People need to lighten up. Part of the reason there is so much hate in this country is because people take offense to anything. I have many black friends who can take a joke and would have seen it as such. I guess I look at people not as racists first, but as people who have a sense of humor. I can’t tell you anything about the person who posted the image. I don’t know what race they are. Would it be less offensive if you knew they were black?

Where can I apply for a refund of the time that I spent looking for something worth reading in this thread?

You need to lighten up. Your self righteous and excusatory responses are running this board into the ground. Summertime on NN.N is hard enough to get through without this kind of stuff cemented to the front page.

If you can’t take responsibility for what you post as an “anonymous” poster then you shouldn’t be posting to begin with. There are firemen in Charlotte that have lost their jobs for posting things on social media that weren’t as offensive.

You should probably discuss with your “many black friends” and get their take on it.

Since this s*** show is here, this is exactly what I’m talking about. No one is trivializing anything here. A valid allusion alone does not imply any form of trivializing. The reaction displayed is entirely too emotionally driven. Then those emotions get in the way of logic and reason and you get people being butthurt over nothing.

I agree, send the thread to the gulag. Those spineless sods are never going to change the name anyways.

Just one big hot button for not tolerating bullshit and stupidity.
If bullshit and stupidity is a hit button for you that gets you all worked up you must have a miserable life since that crap is everywhere. Just take a deep breath and let it go! Your heart will thank you.

Spineless sods would sit by and not speak up when they see this crap. Just because something is an allusion doesn’t mean it doesn’t trivialize. Flogging and lynching are two of the most painful images for blacks. We don’t need that crap on NNN even if it’s an “anonymous” message board. I understand that the intent here was not to be racist but that doesn’t magically make it “ok”.

When you see garbage like this you can either “let it go” or speak up. I choose to speak up. If you don’t speak up you are part of the problem. How I live my life.

I am with you mike.

There was plenty for others to get offended by the pict. I get that, but I try very hard not to get offended on behalf of other people. I try to treat all people as individuals, not groups. I hate everyone equally.

I don’t fault anyone for how they feel just seems getting worked up over a message board seems a little bit of wasted energy. I’ve been very offended by some of the things I’ve seen or read from posters on here but I’m not fighting a battle here or the internet. Some of the things I’ve read here about Christians or Christianity have really bothered me but people have their opinions and I can either choose to let it go or leave the board. Maybe the image was in poor taste maybe it was a joke whatever.

“Spineless sods” was not speaking of anyone posting here.

I think you are completely wrong and this is a very flawed mentality, but good for you for speaking up when you feel the need to do so.
