Coach Cal and Niner history

For you newbies to NNN, bask in the glory of John Calipari and the Memphidiots demise.

A single incident started our hatred of them in about 2000. The Niners (not Mempiss) got one of several AT LARGE bids into the NCAA from CUSA.

Calipari gets on ESPN on the selection show, and trashes the committee for letting CHARLOTTE in! Keep in mind we were conf mates.

The only way Cal ever gets into the NCAA tourny is cheating. Its that simple. At least Lutz does it the right way.

Wait, we didn’t make the tournament in 2000. I think it was actually 2002.

Timeline:

 • Feb 13, 2002 49ers and Memphis play one game that year (at Charlotte). Dejuan Wagoner’s lone year and Jobey Thomas’ senior year. Before the start of the game Memphis players head to mid-court and start stomping on our logo. The Niners (lead by redshirting Calvin Clemmons) get them the heck off the logo. Amazing game, Wagoner and Jobey go back and forth all game with the Niners pulling it out 75-63. (link to boxscore). If I remember correctly, Scoter Mc***don even made a throat-slashing gesture to the students. For an additional laugh, be sure to check his stats out in the box score.

 • Unknown date Metro’s statement above. If I remember correctly Cal listed 3 or 4 schools (us included), all with better RPI’s and SOS’s than Memphis (Charlotte rpi 35, Memphis rpi 70 according to KenPom) and then said to effect of “Charlotte got our spot”. Throws a team from his own conference under the bus, completely ignoring the fact that he LOST TO US!!

 • Post Season We lose in the first round to Notre Dame and Memphis wins the NIT. Memphis fans then spend the rest of the off-season telling us that the NIT championship is better than a 1st round loss in the only tourney that matters. Cal complains the rest of the off-season about the 2 divisions in the conference being the reason the tigers don’t dance and CUSA merges the 2 divisions into 1 the following year.

I think that’s pretty accurate, most of it was off the top of my head (with statsheet and kenpom to steer me in the right direction). Oldtimers, please feel free to add/correct.

Side-note: I can’t remember if this game was televised or not but I’d love to get a copy of it if it was and anybody has it.

yep- good summary. I knew it was around 2000 but not sure which yr

Didn’t Cal get into an argument with one of our assistants (Moxley or Kummer) during a timeout at one of their last games at Halton?

He and Kummer got into it at the 2005 game, IIRC.

Kummer would F’d him up

No doubt.

forD, I’d forgotten about the mid-court incident in 2002. Calvin Clemmons was having NONE of that ****.

Awesomeness. Calvin was the man.

I would love to find the 2002 article about Calipari whining about how Charlotte made it to the NCAAs and how Memphis did not. The article gave example after example about why Charlotte > Memphis and essentially called out Calipari as a dolt for his thinking. Lutz also noted the stupidity of criticizing at-large bids awarded to the conference instead of criticizing at-large bids awarded outside of the conference.

I never liked Calipari before he was the coach of Mempiss and the above three examples only cemented my dislike of him even more.

that same year, Cal scheduled the basketball powerhouse “Christian Brothers U”
(not a joke)

They’re an in-city private school. They played them for years. Would be like us playing Queens.

I wouldn’t do it as a real game, but as an exhibiton, maybe.

I would have to say I enjoyed watching us own them in CUSA. Especially when Basden, Plavich and Withers were on the team (Has to be my fondest college memory, besides storming the court after the UL win).

Eddie with the steal and the jam is literally a highlight moment.

And, Cal is a total slimeball, but he did recognize Eddie… I think he said - “that’s a man, right there”, talking about how Eddie was a player, and could take over a game by making a big play.

In the 6 degrees game - Eddie originally signed with Bruiser Flint at UMass, who took over for Calipari after he left for the NBA…

Seriously, is there one single person on the face of God’s green earth that is surprised by this?

I hate to pre-judge anyone, but you can look at the guy and hear him speak and know he’s a slimeball. A rather successful one, but sleazy none the less.

UK, you’re next. Cal is the only coach to (soon) have 2 Final Four appearances vacated, 3 is coming.

Perhaps you have forgotten
“There’s a sucker born every minute” is a phrase often credited to P.T. Barnum (1810 – 1891), an American showman. It is generally taken to mean that there are (and always will be) a lot of gullible people in the world.
If that’s not enough, do you remember that some people actually thought at one time that Britney Spears was a wholesome young lady?

Finally, its not sports, but its just as funny today to laugh at the stupidity of Jon and Kate pimping their 8 kids for personal gain. But I’m getting too far off topic.

Bottom line…there are many dumb people in this world.

It was on ESPN and we started out 12-1 or 15-1 and totally took them out of their game. Let us also not forget that we lost to Notre Dame without Jobey Thomas and we were actually tied at the half.

We were 11-1 against the rpi 100 and higher

1-7 vs top 25 RPI
6-3 vs RPI 25-99

We just plain played a tough schedule. We had a 7 game conference win streak sandwiched between losses to Cincy. His arguments were stupid and he just wanted to be in.

not to mention Darius Washington trying to hurt Eddie at the end of the game during our last home game one year.

He got a nice treat by missing a foul shot that could have won them the conference tourney and thus, getting them into the big dance. sucker

Jobey had the flu. Was Nance also sick for that game?

Mempiss scheduled nothing but creampuffs, had no solid wins, then complained that the divisions in the conference hurt them. Self-serving retardedness.

EDIT: Sorry, not Nance, Clemmons? Can’t remember who was down low. Was that Spooner?

So did anyone on the ESPN Selection Show call Cal on bashing his own conf. mate, us beating him head-to-head, us having a better rpi, & him counting what should have been an exhibition game vs. cbu? Cause that would have been funny.
