Coach K

I know there’s a lot of anti-acc stuff on here, personally I think its a very, very good conference…the best at the top in the country imho…but after watching the duke carolina game yesterday I gotta say,i’m more convinced than ever that coach k is the best coach in college, and roy is not even within an ass-smell of him.The fact that duke almost won, with who they had playing, and 0 from Reddick in the second half…friggin amazing! He was coaching that game like a Picasso(not the joint) painting! Roy was crapping his pants…he better thank Mr. May for keeping his son there …he was outstanding.I think K bitches at the refs way too much…but the guy can flat out coach a big game!

I think they’re both two of the best in the business but if you had to choose one to get through the NCAA Tournament, I think taking Coach K is a no brainer. Roy has yet to win the big one, despite having some VERY talented teams at Kansas. I do think he’ll get that monkey off his back within the next few years at UNC though. But I don’t think there’s any doubt that K is the best coach in the country and when it’s all said and done, possibly the best ever. With that said, I can’t stand either one of them but I can at least respect their abilities.

oh yeah, great coaches win big games…oh wait, he didn’t win did he? oops.

i don’t care how close a game is, dook fan, if you don’t win it…you shouldn’t get credit for it as if you did.

The whole anti-ACC thing never ceases to amaze me. Last time I checked in Cameron, there were a few National Championship banners that Coach K can attach his name to. Those are usually pretty “big” games. You can hate a coach/team but to say he’s not a great coach is ridiculous.

now did i say he wasn’t a great coach? no. i merely stated that he didn’t win the game and you are acting as if he did.

You specifically stated that great coaches win big games. And I specifically stated that Coach K has won games much bigger than the one yesterday. Disect that however you want but the man has proven to be the best active coach in the country. If you disagree, then it's strictly personal with you. You sure you're not a UNC fan? :P

Just b/c I’m bored, I’ll add my 0.02:

Any time you take a team that’s missing a strong role player and go into someone elses arena with an already short roster and put yourself in a chance to win, you did 99% of everything right. That’s all the original poster was saying.
Granted, it’s Duke/Carolina, so of course the players are up for it, but still…give credit where credit is due.
Hell, I thought Bobby did a pretty damn good job in the first Cincy game and we got crushed.

Sort of OT, but I found Roy’s comments on espn (think it was the Sunday Conversation) pretty interesting yesterday re: winning the big one. Said in the early 80s, when Dean Smith won his first title, Williams told him “Coach, now we finally shut everyone up.” Smith looked at him and said “You know, I don’t feel like I’m any better of a coach than I was two hours ago.” That’s a pretty damn good point, IMO.
I’m not originally from NC, so I moved into the state and never took sides on the whole ACC fence (hence my desire to go to the only school I applied to, Charlotte). But c’mon - both of those guys are solid coaches and as much fun as it is to hate them, you’d take either of them on your bench in a big game.

I’m biased but I have to say the two coaches who I thought really did it the right way are Coach K and Coach Wooden. You could look at the programs they run and see that they care as much about their players then basketball. Their kids always earn good grades, and they both graduated their players consistently. Dean is right up there with them, but UNC was always a little dirtier than Duke. I hope that Charlotte can come close to the type of program Duke has now, and that UCLA ran in the 60’s and 70’s.

Yaawwnn! (Sigh) Are’nt there re-runs of the Beverly Hillbillies on?

Yawn.

With the amount of talent those two teams have the coach could be snorting his drug of choice on the sidelines. I say put Lutz at the helm of one of those teams, if only briefly, and see if he ever loses a game (except to clemson and florida state, I guess that is Lutz’s claim to fame, can’t win the easy ones.)

Well I appreciate the kind words. I can promise you that with all the Kitler avatars, Krysheffski photoshops, K is Satan, ratface owns the refs and the like, it’s certainly refreshing to see some positve comments. Good luck to you guys!

PS. You guys got a pretty good one yourselves.

why does everyone always say that??

does anyone not remember the same squad was 8-20 a few yrs ago??

the same squad without may, manuel and mccants. Would you want jackie manuel as your shooting gaurd?

my mistake, felton too

Didn’t Duke blow a 11 point lead with 3 minutes left???

No it was a nine points. Plus Williams had four fouls, & Shav was out of the game (fouled out). They couldn't get a rebound, UNC just took over the boards at that point. Their free throw shooting killed them as well. Hats of to Carolina, but they didn't deserve to win that game.

You have to love K-factor…what a legend! :bball:

Ya they are nothing without Shav in there, what a force!!! How big a lead did they blow against UConn last year in the final four???

And the key statement in your last quote…

last year in the final four

Losing in a Final Four is tough, but at least we get that chance occasionally*

*Occasionally meaning half of the time since the tournament was expanded to 64 teams in 1985.
