Youâre right he wonât coach here again because we canât afford to have a coach with such a serious medical problem (his heart and itâs really serious) that forces him to take long leaves of absence with no warning. That said the school has insurance to buy out contracts of coaches who have medical problems that prevent them from performing their functions. He was headed for an end in his tenure here without illness but I really hate to see him forced out of his profession because of a serious medical condition. I know the condition and my cousin just recently died from it after having the same procedure that Major had this past summer. I wish him luck with this condition because he will need it to survive long term, but it requires a non stressful lifestyle that rules out coaching college basketball to survive it.
Will we be adding another assistant coach?
Didnât sound like it since Major will be still recruiting.
Think heâll eventually resign? If so, hope he does it at the end of this season and not drag it out trying to come back again just to collapse on the bench during a game. Good God, no.
What exactly is wrong with his heart? Will be praying for him. I have to believe that there are some good things down the line for him. He really does love basketball more than just about anything else and Iâd hate to see him unable to coach at all in one capacity or another. Get well coach!

No recent info, but wasnât the original problem an irregular heart beat? That can be instantly deadly.

A few highlights:

Judy: âWeâre not going to pressure him in anyway from any time standpoint.â
Rose said Major will be back and he will decide when that days is.
Odom: âWeâre not going to change anything. We are going to attack the same was as if Alan were here.â

Well all of that just makes me so excited.

Well, the Odom part (I suspect) is just being respectful to Alan as he should be. Whatâs he going to sayâŚâWeâre going to change everything up now that Alan is goneâ ?
He could have said âWeâll continue to spend a big part of the game digging ourselves a hole and the rest trying to climb outâ.
I would say their is little truth to any of that, but those are the lines that must be said at this point. Good luck to Major.

I donât know why some on here think itâs imposible to say they arenât happy with the results of the season so far without throwing someone under the bus. Then this happened we were 6-8!
How about something like thisâŚ
âWe are going to miss the leadership of Alan and I will continue to talk to him about how the season is going, though we are not happy with the way the season has gone so far, we have to get better and if need be change some things up to give us a sparkâ
Itâs not rocket science people.

Nobody said it was âimpossibleâ but that is not what happened. I was only giving an explanation of why I suspect Ryan said what he did.

Also, even if you say it in a tactful way, there is really no reason to do that in your first interview while it is being announced that the coach is leaving due to medical issues. You can address it in follow up interviews at a later time. Itâs not like he isnât interview before and after every game, not to mention the coachâs show and any newspaper interview requests.
Odom had a very fine line to walk here. He is the interim head coach only, filling in for a sick colleague/superior (possibly a mentor I have no idea).
No matter what he thinks and feels he is going to be guarded in every communication he makes.
Judy has to do the same. She HAS to support major 100%. Not only because itâs the polite thing to do for a sick colleague/employee but also because she may have to go out into the market to find a coach in the near future. You certainly want to be seen supporting your current staff.

Yes indeed, and⌠If Odom is more successful, then Major will probably receive some credit since it is his team, especially if Odom continues to do things the way Major did. If the program continues to be unsuccessful under Odom, then he may wind up helping to take the fall. Itâs not the same scenario, but I thought the assistant at Duke that filled in for Coach K during the '94-'95 season (I think that was the season) took somewhat of a bum rap for that teamâs lack of success.
Same songâŚnew verse. We need a total housecleaning from this disaster. 5 years of the same old same old is quite enough for me.

While I wish AM the very best, at some point frequent medical leave for a chronic illness is a job fail and he should be replaced. Being the HC is NOT a part-time, seasonal job.
