When college sports become prosports I will walk away.
That is one thing that I think is left out of much of this discussion is donors. If the players end up getting paid what % of donors walk away? That has a significant impact at some institutions.
Does every varsity athlete at these schools receive the stipend? There are many walkons in sports such as baseball, softball, and track. Do walkons receive a stipend?
If the payments are concentrated in revenue sports, there could be Title IX issues.
I had wondered about this as well but also with respect to teams that give partial scholarships. Take baseball for example where scholarships are split up to where most players don’t get a full scholarship. Do the scholarship players receive the same percentage of the stipend as their scholarship, the full stipend, or none at all?
I suppose the horse is out of the barn, but if no schools paid any money, not a single athlete would quit playing.
