Club sports don’t have scholarships and would have far less access to NCAA level comp and championships and support. I also think, might be wrong, you don’t even have to be a student to play a club sport.
Yes, one has to be a student to participate in club sports. Differs from school to school on whether participants have to be enrolled full time or not.
Why should a low income student on student loans be paying student fees for a wealthy student to be on a scholarship golf or tennis team?
Some sports would seem to be better suited as club sports. The Niner hockey club team probably gets more spectators than some of our Olympic scholarship sports.
You can probably make that case for tennis and golf, but many of the other sports are just regular lower to middle class kids playing a sport and hoping to get an education.
Now you can argue that sponsoring any sports at a high level is outside of the mission of the university and should not be done. Why should any student be forced to pay fees for that.
Student athletic fees are next on the chopping block.
And I support it.
If college players are getting paid I see no way student athletic fees are not eventually stopped. One law suit and they are done. It clearly would not hold up to legal scrutiny.
And that would truly be the death of Charlotte 49ers athletics.
Yep, I’m surprised no one has complained loud enough about NIL recipients ALSO getting full ride scholarships. Personally, if an athlete is getting NIL in excess of a full ride, the NIL should pay for the tuition or they shouldn’t get both a full ride and NIL.
I steered all my giving away from sports that might have players receiving NIL payments. Only way I could donate and not feel dirty.
We’re just a zombie athletic department anyway. Dead, but carrying on like we’re not.
McKenzie is attorney from the Triangle area.
OMG please let FSU win.
Chaos!!!
The entire college sports industry brought down by the hubris of a university community so butt hurt over not getting a playoff berth that they didn’t deserve that they are willing to spend millions and burn everything around them to the ground.
I say Godspeed!
As McKenzie was points out, if FSU wins, it’s not just college sports that will be affected. I’m not an attorney, so a good bit of his post and follow-ups etc go right over my head, but I get the gist of what he’s saying.
I’m sure that interstate commerce will survive.
What’s important is that the Noles were screwed out of a chance to play in the playoffs with their backup quarterback who made them TOTALLY deserving to be ranked in the top 4 last year.
It was unfair and it’s the ACCs fault!!!
If Cal and Stanford had stayed in, this would have been a solid 8 team league.
They’d probably look at UNLV and Air Force too, but a ballsy move might be to take some of the FCS powers from the Big Sky, like NDSU or Montana.
Being reported on multiple outlets… This looks like it’s going to come together pretty quickly.
I really hope we’re not headed back to a CUSA 3.0 like conference. I really think this eventually hits the AAC and not in a good way.
