Alright guys, I’m trying to talk the wife into going to the tourney. Can anyone give me any points of emphasis? She is a huge Niner fan, just can’t get her very interested in going. Are there any pre/post game party possibilities if we stay at the team hotel?
Give me any ammo you can. If I can’t convince her, I may be able to talk a co-worker, fringe-fan, into the trip.
I’m fighting a similar battle Mac but I fear we will be choosing between the tournament in Memphis or a trip to Charleston in April (doing both is likely not an option). The tournament is going to be a tough sell for me over a trip to the coast. At least you have her being a huge Niner fan as leverage. My wife went to college in Michigan and wouldn’t know the Niners existed if she weren’t married to me. So I may have to play the “city of Memphis” angle because I know she’d love to check out all the sites/sounds there. Maybe she can go shop around Memphis while I attend the games.
You gotta sell her the other stuff: food, shopping, sights, attractions, etc. You do have to put up with whatever she wants to do when games aren’t being played, but for me it’s worth it. We’re happy. She’s not an alumna, but is a NINER fan and enjoys the games too, but without the other stuff, it would not be as much fun for her. I’ll take it. I get to go.
Do we know where the Niners would be staying? I presume it would be the Intercontinental (formerly the Marriott), althought it’s closer to the Pyramid than the FedEx Arena. The coolest hotel in town is the Peabody…they have trained ducks that live there that parade in an out of the elevator each day…on a red carpet. They spend the day in the hotel fountain!! The Peabody is big bucks, though. There’s a Holiday Inn Select across from it, and a Hampton Inn very near the FedEx arena, but I doubt they’re big enough for the teams.
I think the team hotel is the Holiday Inn near Beale Street (Contact the 49er club more more information). Pre and post game parties are hosted by the Athletic Foundation in the hospitality suite. Everyone is welcome. There’s always plenty of food and beverage. They will probably provide transportation to the games. Definitely a good time.
The team hotel is the Holiday Inn Select, right across the street from the Peabody. Last time we played the tourney there the wife and I ran into Dixie Carter and Hal Holbrook having lunch at the Peabody. Must be Niner fans.
We are within walking distance of Beale Street and the FedEx Arena. The world famous Rendezvous rib restaurant is right behind the hotel (go to Corky’s though if you want better food). There is Graceland, shopping and basketball. You will get to see Charlotte win three times in three days and we won’t be playing on Wednesday. We will win the trophy and not be invited back. That’s what we do. Hey Wolfpack, we still have your manhood!
If you go stay in the team hotel if you can. At $129 a night it isn’t the cheapest place around, but if you weren’t coming with the team it would be $179-199. Everything centers around our hotel. The hospitality suite is the meeting spot, you will see the team, the coaches, and the great Niner fans at breakfast every morning and if you want to go see the SFU-Houston game at 9:00 pm on Wednesday that is where you will be able to find someone to go with you.
Wear green. Everyday. Everywhere.
Conference tournaments are a lot of fun, especially when you have a shot at winning them. I think we do.
The letter I got from the 49er Club said the cutoff date was 2/14 or whenever the rooms in the block were gone. When I booked on Friday there were 21 rooms already booked.

Hey Mac…One of our posters compiled this awhile back. It’s full of links and info of things to do and see in Memphis. Hope it helps.
Mac’s wife is seriously into horses. I would bet there must be something related to horses around there somewhere. Any help along those lines?
Good luck Mac. I failed in my attempt to convince my wife, even though school is on break that week. This is my daughter’s senior year in high school, and my wife wants to enjoy every minute of that she can. Next year that excuse won’t hold water.

GO NINERS!!! [/b]
Oh yeah. The years the tourney was in Loserville, we checked out the Lexington horse county. It was a perfect complement to the games for my wife. See how easy it is. I really enjoyed it too. It does help to be compatible and have similar interests with a girlfriend/spouse. If not, it’s just for the sex and a relationship that will go nowhere once the sex gets routine.
