Dead Depressed Board & Fanbase

Apologies, because this originally was written to be a reply, but I felt it deserved its own thread… this was in response to someone questioning my statement that “with fans like us, who needs detractors”…

[hr]

It’s pretty much the whole temperature of the board.

We get on our team for not being able to handle any sliver of success, but as a fanbase, we’re not only terrified of it, we hate the idea of it.

I was bored for a while yesterday so I wandered around some team boards for both the A10 and some other schools… aside from the historically awful programs and the few that are having awful seasons; we by far have the most negative view of our team, our season, and our program in general. It’s fairly comical if you’re into that sort of thing.

It’s not about whether or not 18 wins is enough to hang your hat on - it’s stuff like a dead board (this board is absolutely dead given the season we’re having), and the fanbase’s refusal as a whole to consider the possibility of success such as a conference title. We have more people counting losses and ways that we will fail than we have excited about the prospect of winning.

Count me out. I guess I made a conscious decision that I’m not going to suffer through the season awash in pessimism and negativity. This team won’t win them all, but I like them. Exactly 3 out of every 4 times they’ve taken the floor this season, they’ve won, and sometimes in dramatic fashion. I’m gonna try my darndest to enjoy that, sourpussed pessimist fans be damned.

Some days, our board reads like it’s another program trying to put us down. “Mid Major” “can’t win” “don’t deserve to get in with 22 wins”… yawn. No thanks.

I’m sure i’ll get knee jerk responses about losing by 82,497 points (the number goes up everytime), etc, or that we just lost a game. s*** happens. Even Kansas has a loss. Temple got absolutely abused by Kansas but no one talks about it. Xavier got drilled by Dayton the same way we did, but then went on the road and beat Florida. But more important than that, their fans are enjoying the ride. Our fans are like that guy who waits in line for 2 hours to ride the roller coaster and then bitches about every kink in the track. Why bother?

NA, thanks for clarifying what you meant. I actually wasn’t trying to be an @$$ (if it came off that way), just wondered what your thoughts were behind your statement of “with fans like us, who needs detractors”…

I agree with you, in part, that some of our fans have gone overboard. We’ve had some tough losses but so have every other team in the A-10 and most teams in the country minus a few. I was amazed the “sky is falling attitude” many of our fans had after the Dayton game, considering it’s a tough road enviorment.

My view of the team and the program has turned. At the start of the season and particularly after the Xavier road loss, I was very down on the team, the program, and especially Bobby. Since that time, I have been proven wrong and I am thankful for that. I love the fact that Bobby has proved me wrong thus far this season. I am thrilled to have been wrong about him right now.

I don’t think our board is unique to having skeptical fans anymore then any other program. I think we just notice it more on here because we’re Niner fans. I know Duke fans who are skeptical if they can win in the NCAA tournament and they’re a top 10 team. My co-worker this morning was telling me that he had real doubts if Wake Forest was “really that good” and they’re ranked #23 in the country and listed as a 5 seed in the bracketology. I have heard Carolina fans saying “Roy has lost it” and they won an NCAA championship a year ago. My point is, skepticism is everywhere, no matter what season fans have.

All this time I thought it was just me with this crazy idea reading some of the threads.

So, it’s safe to say:

-We have more beatches on NNN compare to the rest. And, can’t wait to come out with nasty comments at all time.

great post NA. I’m tired of all the pessimism too. We’ve had a great year to this point, far exceeding everyone’s expectations. Sure we could have played better in a few games, but so could 98% of other teams. We have 18 W’s, coming off of a 11 W season. Hitting the 20 W mark will be sweet. Bobby’s done a great job, as have the players. The future is looking bright right now, wish everyone would enjoy what’s happening.

Part of the reason I put this in a new thread and didn’t say your name is that I had no intention of singling you out.

I don’t know if it’s the never ending winter or the constant streak of pessimism cause this team has had a handful of big margin losses.

I’m just not experiencing much joy this season when I should be. We sucked balls last year, and look at how we’ve gotten back up off the mat… We still have several rounds to go, but as a fan, I should be up outta my seat cheering that our guys still have a chance to win the fight…

I let that notion stew for about 4 days, wondering if I just needed a midol, but after some more objective analysis, we’re awfully damn pessimistic as a fanbase. Also, we have way too many posters on this board who are more concerned with being right, and being able to say “I told you so”, than we have just trying to have fun with all of this… (sports are supposed to be fun, ya know?) With all the crap going on in the economy, lousy weather, natural disasters, etc, can’t we just enjoy something as mindlessly fun and visceral as a pretty darn good bball team?

If I’ve been a factor in creating the negative environment, I apologize.

I think this board is dying partially because of its tech performance. Half the time it works, half the time it doesn’t or loads slow. I am not whining, I appreciate every ounce of effort this board takes to keep online, but ever since the change over, its very hard to follow.

The performance won’t keep away the diehards, but the lurkers and sporadic posters will vanish if the issues persist.

Even with the glitches NN.N is one of the best message boards. I sincerely appreciate all the work it takes to keep this board working. I honestly have no idea how I would keep up with the Niners without NN.N. My interest would probably diminish considerably without NN.N simply because it would be so damn hard to keep up without this board.

I am enjoying this season, especially after the last half decade. Are the Niners back to where we wish they would be, not yet, but the team is improving. Nothing wrong with wanting the team to make the NCAAs every year, not wanting to lose by 30+ to ANYONE, and people voicing their opinions, but I decided to enjoy this season. It’s been a while. I am coming to Halton next next weekend and am actually excited. First time in Halton in a couple of years.

I’ll be there also, VA. And I’m going to the A-10 tournament. Anyone who is pissed about this season is probably just pissed about life in general.

Anyone who is letting pissed off fans ruin this season for them should get over it.

We’re on the bubble, we haven’t been on the bubble in a long time. We’re, at worst, the third best team in the state. 3BC, word!

Very insightful comments, NA. I agree with your thoughts. But remember, we’ve had to deal with a lot of “choke endings” to their seasons over the years. People may have grown a little gun shy…I know I have.

yeah- I’m thinking of going up myself. This season has been breath of fresh air for me. Even if it ends in disappointment, I’ve had reason to follow college bball this year. It used to be a religion for me. Feels good to care again.

BTW…how the hell did those pics wind up on my message screen?..I didn’t post them.

agree- not criticizing 'cause I’m a tech idiot and I couldn’t begin to understand the issues, but I work at home and follow the board. When it’s slow or down, I have to bag it and move on.

Major glitch max, I am trying to fix.

LOL…I’d have my flat screen chords managed much better!

LOL, last week one of my posts had an AA fund raising doc attached to it…I was like WTF? I don’t have anything to do with AA or on my computer…

tff…lmao! 12 steps baby!

It’s that post # issue that I mentioned. Quite literally - ghosts of past posts (same post #s) reappaering to haunt us.

I’ve asked this before…where do I need to send a small donation to help? I’m sure this is a costly endeaver for you guys.

Looks like Metro missed the boat on admitting that one cannot control one’s addiction or compulsion.
