I know alot of you hate the subject but I can’t resist. I saw in the paper today Winthrop is 16-4 and 6-0 Big So once again having a stellar year. They have some nice wins this year too like MSU.
Do you guys still think Lutz is better than Marshal??
Winthrop plays in the Big South w/ hoops powerhouses such as Radford, Liberty and VMI. N. Meck could compete in that league. Marshall is a good coach that somehow gets players to buy into the fact they can go to the tourney every year.
They are the Valpo of the south. Valpo wins their league every 2 out of 3 years. Kids who are not good enough to play high major ball want to atleast play in the NCAA tourney so they go to schools such as Winthrop or Valpo.
Metro, I agree that Winthrop has a very good team this season. They would certainly compete for a conference title this season if a member of the SoCon, CAA, and perhaps even the A-10. Still, as most of the sportswriters have noted, the Eagles struck out on all of their high-profile games this season and the only way they are going dancing is to win the Big South tourney.
I don’t understand any of your equations to RPI and SOS. That is irrelevant to the argument in reference to how well a coach performs.
If you are dominating the league every year, you have a “system” that allows your equitable talent to beat teams in your same scope/league.
I wonder how many Indiana fans said "that Bobby Knight, he’s just from Army"
or “Bill Self played weak Missouri Valley teams, he can’t coach Big 10”
…that is what you are saying, in reference to Marshal.

thats not my point!
I agree with all of that.
I am saying Marshal has his act together and wins that league every year and Winthrop was a DOORMAT before he got there. He has a hell of a system and success rate. I admit I fantasize about him coaching the Niners. I think he would bring whatever it is he possesses to Charlotte.
A win is a win is a win. How do you think N. Texas views there early victory at Halton? At the time the Mean Green were fairly happy with the W. Now they are looking back and saying maybe Charlotte is not the team they thought they were going to be. Similar to how you guys viewed the Hofstra victory.
Marshall came back to Winthrop because he is waiting for the BIG offer. CofC is a better school, city is nice, he has roots there, but lets be honest when the next Big XII, Big 10 or any other major conference school comes calling he will say bye bye to good ole’ Rock Hill and hello big time.

exactly,
and he would come to Charlotte right now.
He makes like 150k a year with a car and CC membership.

Well, apparently he didn’t need the major increase in salary he would have made by taking the CofC job, nor the increased exposure from being in the SoCon instead of the Big South. I don’t think his reneging on the CofC position won him any brownie points with the so-called big time ADs.
But heck, look what reneging on the USC job got Bobby Cremins. He did end up back in South Carolina afterall, didn’t he?!
We should make a dead horse forum for threads like this.
and you need a forum where invalid points are made:
you (as stated above) equate the success of a coach to the conference he plays in.
Many big time coaches proved themselves at lower levels, as a matter of fact its sort of a ritual. Do you realize how many legendary coaches have had to dominate at lower levels before they got the great job? Dominating the Big South for about the 8th year in a row means alot actually, it means he dominates competition that has equal resources, talent, and opportunity.
Truth hurts sometimes. Metro, I have a hard time beleiving that Marshall would come to Charlotte. If Winthrop makes it to the tourney this year, his stock will be so high only a BCS conference school will be able to steal high from Rock Hill.
BCS jobs open at the end of the year (potentialy):
Colorado
Wake Forest
Mich.
UK (Tubby to the Bobcats)

I agree with some of that. I guess what I really wish is Lutz went to UT, then Marshal would be in his 3rd year at UNCC, because he lobbied for the UNCC job from what I was told.
Now is the time not to start being picky. B. Pearl is a damn good coach. See his turnaround of a bad UT team to a #2 seed in the NCAA in one season. Passion, that is something that Charlotte basketball is lacking. Lutz, the fire plug of all fire plugs seems to be even wearing down.
To me it looks like he is not having fun anymore. That is what losing does for you. Hence the reason Metro started this thread, winning 50 games against subpar teams can boost the teams morale. Winthrop has no business hanging around w/ teams like Wis. and UNC, but they know how to win and that alone helped them stay close in those games.
